Did anyone else have 2-3 upshift problems?

I took the car to the dealer today complaining about a 2 to 2 upshift. The explorer (98 EB AWD) seemed to shift very hard and jerky.

The dealer says a new transmission is needed. I was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem?

Is this s design fault by Ford?

I have a 98 EB as well. The tranny is shifting into 3 too soon and then slamming back down into 2nd. It started this yesterday morning and it starting overheating at the same time. I just got it back from the dealership a couple of weeks ago due to a a/c problem. They are going to get it back this morning. I'll let you know what I find out.

I had a similar problem with my '95 in addition to an overdrive problem. The 2-3 shift problem was corrected by replacing the solenoid after having the tranny rebuilt.

Just got back from the dealer, going to be Friday, maybe Monday before they can even look at it. Dealership asked me if I had the extended warranty, wich I dont have. Is the drive-train not covered longer than 3/36000? It's got exactly 37108 miles on it?

Well, just as I submitted my last post, the dealer called. They had actually been able to look at my tranny. It has some serious problems according to them. They gave me an estimate of $2541.00 for a new transmission. Is it just me or is that just a wee bit too steep? I don't know.

When I had a s10 blazer I had to have my tranny rebuilt. Aamco did it for 1400 dollars. 2500 does seem too steep. Unfortunately for you, the drivetrain warranty does end at 36000 miles. If I were you I would get a quote from another place.

$2500 is high. My rebuild cost $1700. Luckily, they had to replace the solenoid ($300+) under warranty because I still had the 2-3 shift problem after the rebuild.

Yes, your powertrain warranty ran out at 36,000 miles. However, since you are so close to the 36K limit, some dealers will cut the price especially if you ***** and complain loud enough. Another option, is the dealer that you purchased your Explorer from is authorized to give you a big discount (up to 70% off I think) on up to two repairs when you have less than 50K. Supposedly it has to be the dealer that you purchased from, and they prefer if you have had all of your maintenance done there as well, but I don't know if that is a requirement or not.I have seen numerous posts from people that have used the program, and my local dealer told me about it as well. My dealer wouldn't budge from the stipulation that it can only be the dealer you purchased it from even though I bought mine in Ohio, and now live in Arizona.

Well, I called Ford and asked them if there was anything that I or the dealer or Ford could do to help me out a little. Ford told that since it was over the 36000 mile limit and I did not purchase the extended warranty that they could not do anything for me.
A short while later the dealership called me back and said the I could purchase the PO7 warranty for arounf $450. It would cover the expenses up to $2000. This is better than the original price they gave me, but it is still around $1000 for them to not even drop the pan on it and look to see what is really wrong. I am going to take it to another mechanic to see if it can be fixed without replacing the whole thing.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

Did you ask about their special program? Is this the dealer you purchased it from? If it is, their special program applies to you since it is national program. They won't tell you about it until you pry it out of them.

Stuck solenoid

That was the diagnostic.

They fixed the sticking solenoid and all is well.

solenoid????

Could someone please explain what this piece does and where it is located?? I had a rebuilt trans installed by ford after them telling me that the pressures were off and they barely got it in the shop bay before it started locking up and making a lot of nasty noises. But I must say, 147,500 miles on the ORIGINAL, REGULARLY SERVICED trans isn't bad when you consider I tow anything and everything with it(you name it:2700lbs pop up trailer, Car trailer with race car on it, 4 x 8 trailer with quad, etc.) And I don't have the towing package.
thanks

OK, I am still in a state of shock here.
I took the explorer to the local Mr. Transmission, they did a complete check of the tranny, electical and all. He asked me how long I have had an overheating problem. (It started bout the same time) He then happily told me that he was 99% sure that all I needed to do is replace my electronic coolant temp sensor.($40 from Ford) HE said it would not hurt to go ahead and change the thermostat as well.
He then asked me if I would bring it back to him after I had changed the part out so he could check it again. He wanted to make sure that it wasnt damaged from the shifting. Best of all, he is doing this FREE OF CHARGE!! I could not believe this. Ford wanted $2600 to change out the tranny and Mr. Transmission found the problem, told me what it was and did not charge me.
Hats off to Mr. Transmission.

I hope this will help others out if they have these kind of problems. My best advice is to always get a second opinion from someone else when possible.

I am still debating on if I should call Ford and let them know about this. (Give a piece of my mind ;) ) Don't get me wrong I still like Ford Vehicles and will continue to drive them, but I will question the service dept.

If interested I, below is what he told was the problem.

OK. The PCM uses the sensor's input to help control the closed mode controlling of the fuel mixture. It also controls the torque converter clutch lockup when the engine is cold. When the car runs hot it engages the clutch, which happens to always be in 2nd gear. This in turn throws the tranny into third gear. When it does this, the RPM's are to low and it shifts back into second. If this keeps occuring it can cause serious damage to the tranny.

1 more quick thing. Anyone know where this sensor is located? :)
