Something bad happend today. I left a redlight and manually shifted my 5 speed auto from 1st, 2nd, then to D. But it went passed and into N for a second, back to D while it reved to about 4200 rpm's. When it went into D it screached the tires like it was a 5 speed Mustang!!! Did I do anything potentially damaging to the transmission? Everything seems fine with it now.

I think you should be fine i've done it before, i wouldn't recomend doing it on purpose or for fun, but you should be fine.

You stressed the driveline but shouldn't have done any permanent damage. Basically it was like popping the clutch in a manual and the torque converter had to take the strain. Our trannies aren't wonderful to begin with, so don't do that often or you'll smoke your TC.

I am just curious why you were doing that in the first place?

Had an 89 Tbird, auto, I used to do that to ALL the time. Eventually had to get the tranny and rear diff. replaced. Your X has a stronger setup than the t-bird so you'll be fine. Just don't make a habit out of doing it. And yes I know it was a dumb thing to do all the time. But I sure could smoke some tires in that Bird! ;)

Racing a late 90's Maxima. In Poughkeepsie Ricers on Route 9 get the dumbest look when they get beat off the line and up to 55 by an Explorer!!! I back off at 55 because by then they have the RPM's up to around 7000 and can pass me like I was sitting still.
