Here is my situation. i have a 94 explorer xlt with 9 inches of lift. I have 4 36x12 15 super swamper radial tsl tires. One got a screw in the sidewall. Because the tread is getting low i just want to replace the tires and step it down 2 35s. My question is if i run the the 36s in the rear with about 35% tread left and put new 35s up front until i can afford 2 more 35s, would the tire diameters be close enough to safely drive without damage to my transfer case?

measure the tires some tires can be bigger or smaller then what they say

why would i remove the front drive shaft, i have 4x4. i use it..problem with measuring them is i didnt buy the 35s yet

May be possible in theory. But you'd probably have to measure to make sure. Different tread styles measure differently I think.

You can drive it, but you can never put it in 4wd or you will grenade something.

My buddies 01 X toasted the transfer case because he smacked a curb and ruined the wheel then he threw on a way different tire size. He used a friends 18" wheel/tire from Mounty because it was all he could find to get the truck home.

Buy the 35's, measure them, if they are close, then don't worry about it. If they are way off, then make sure you have NO traction if you use 4x4 at all...
