Indeed, this is another issue I am about to explore in the forums. My vehicle is displaying symptoms of transmission failure but not all the time. For example, sometimes during acceleration the vehicle sounds as if it is winding and it does not accelerate with full force and power. But, if I slow down or stop the vehicle then it accelerates with full power and force. I am skeptical that this is a transmission failure because when the vehicle is in cruise control mode, it drives great with power and acceleration force, without the winding noise. I mentioned this problem to a friend and he suggested maybe the problem lies in the transfer case.

I don't know if this is the right thread to ask this question, but I'm gonna give it a try.
I'm planning on installing an oil temperature gauge, and everything I have been reading says you either have to get the oil filter sandwich plate (I don't really understand how it is held up there), or drill through your drain pan (which isn't happening).
So, my question is could you tap into the oil temp by going through the stock oil pressure sensor?
Any help would be appreciated it, Thanks

Excellent post. Just bought an Explorer. This started happening right away. (I swear it didn't happen on my test drive.)

On my way to work in the morning the light stays on and it the needle is buried until I'm 1/2 mile down the road. At first I thought everything was fine as it would eventually shoot straight up to the perfect level. My thinking was that if it were a failing oil pump the pressure would gradually increase.

Anyway, this part is $5.99 here. Looks like a quick and cheap fix. I'll repost after I install the part.

I have the same problem (2001 ST), start motor, takes ~2-3 minutes for the Oil Pressure sensor gauge to move, better in the summer than winter.

The gauge is in a really tight spot to get at:

1. Any special tooling required?
2. What size and length socket do I need to buy to remove the gauge?
3. Any tricks to getting the sensor unplugged, push pull?

Thanks for posting the writeup and the photos. You've motivated me to order a real sending unit and "T" so I can have a real oil pressure gauge in addition to the stock dummy gauge that is actually just an idiot light in disguise.

I was worried when it first started doing this over the weekend. didnt drive it incase it was the pump...but my thought was if it was the pump, it wouldnt go form off to on in a split second.

my mustang did this too.

Question on the Oil Senor issue

I have a 2002 Ranger with the 3.0 liter engine. When I turn the ignition switch on the oil gauge jumps to the center position. When I start the engine the needle jumps above the high level. I have replaced the oil sensor thinking that would fix the issue but it did not. Anyone had this problem? Should the needle move to the center position with the switch turned to the first position?

Does anyone know where the oil pressure sending unit is on a 2001 ford explorer SOHC? Ny oil gauge was doing the same thing and now it will not run. The mechanic said it was the timeing chain and to get a new motor. It has a bad rattle that cleared up when they first told me to put sea foam in the oil crank case. The noise came back 10 fold and then would not start anymore. any ideas?

Ouch...Sounds like maybe your gauge was actually working and you had no oil pressure. A mechanic heard rattling, thought it was the timing chain, and then had you put crap in the crankcase? Fire him.

The sending unit is on the driver's side near the front of the engine. I have a picture of the engine that has it in plain view. PM me with your email if you need the pic. I have my 4.0 engine and trans for sale, but am in TN. I have been to lazy to post it.

Thanks for the post, I have a 01 sport trac that has had this exact same problem for two winters now. I was unable to find the location of the sender in my repair manual. Only $8 at my local parts store. Thanks!

My 01 Sport started doing the exact same thing around 100K miles. When the temperature was at or below 55 degree; the gage was on zero. Once I drove for a few miles and the engine started to warm up the needle would jump to attention.

your pics look simple and i own a 2001 explorer sport.....and i am having the same problem but your pics show the unit clearly enough when i removed my tire and splash guard it did not look like that in fact it was buried under wires and pipes..........i am stumped...

Hi Everyone, I went to Napa and bought the switch but it does not look like this at all, it has a threaded post and the guy said it goes above the power steering pump? Help. Cheers, Sammy

I know this is an old thread but does anyone know if this is called a fuel and oil pressure sensor? That is what autozone is calling it on the phone. The guy seems to know less than me, which is hard to believe. 2002 Ford Explorer XLT. Which he couldn't even find in the computer??? I must have a one of a kind truck.

when I did a search on autozone, I saw the combo oil/fuel sensor...thats under accessories. Yours will be under parts
