Yes, I need to learn how to weld, I have many projects that will need it.

This thread has really gone off track:p: I thought it was about going from a Class II to a III:roll:Anyway I would not change unless your Explorer/ST can handle the additional weight:p:

I agree i had the local trailer hitch shop do it for me, still welding is a hobby i would like to take up.

Ditto  I have 22 employees who can weld everthing from steel to aluminum and some metals I can not mention. I wish I could weld like they do:salute:

Regarding the differential gear ratio: going from 3.55 to a 3.73 is only a 5% difference.

The EXACT same effect can be had by downsizing the tires from 245/65/17 to 235/60/17. The difference in diameter is about 5%, so you've essentially geared your truck 5% lower.

With that setup, there's no reason a 4.0L can't handle the rated 5500 lbs of the 3.73 gears.

ok

I was quietly perusing when I saw this:
and some metals I can not mention.

And had to ask.... go ahead. Mention! You have my curiosity up....

Back on track, if I understand the OP correctly, he is saying not to upgrade the factory hitch without adding some components because you could wind up damaging the vehicle.

If that's what you're saying, I say that's right. But that's not an Explorer issue, that is a vehicle issue.

The manufacturers are a little conservative, but they generally have a good idea what will fly on a vehicle. When you want to do something outside the accepted range, you have to accept you'll need to beef up other things as well.

I agree, if you are towing heavy things often, you do need a more appropriate rear end, and big trans cooler. I also am a fan of the big mirrors, braking system, load leveling hitch and a big engine, too.

I guess it just boils down to not thinking you can bolt on one item and be able to use it to its' full capacity. I'd like the bigger hitch not for the weight, but because I have a lot of accessories for the larger one.
