I was just looking at the Service Manual for 97 Ranger and Explorer, and I can tell you that the front shocks have a completely different mounting on the lower end so they would not work. I'm almost positive that the front suspension is the same on an Explorer for 96 and 97. Your only chance might be a newer Ranger, after they changed to the SLA (short arm, long arm) type of front suspension. I don't know which year Ranger has the newer suspension, but it was after 97.
