that may be what it sounds like, but they changed the configuration of the exhaust on the SOHC one year (i think 2000, maybe) to a single inlet, single outlet. the older SOHC's have a dual inlet, single outlet muffler and gibson doesnt make a kit for us guys with the older SOHC. kinda sucks.

Just fabricate a simple Y pipe; easy fix.

thats one possibility (ive thought about this a lot), but the gibson kit is a bolt on kit, and its not terribly cheap. so, after you buy the kit, youd have to take it to a good exhaust shop (my guys know me well, heh) and pay them to chop it up, fabricate a y-pipe, and install the whole deal. (even still, it might not work. by the time they fabricate the y-pipe, it would push the muffler towards the rear of the truck, even its only a couple of inches, it might be enough to make it not work; im not sure of all the clearances under there.) we all know that anything is possible if you got enough money to make it happen, but this is just exhaust we're talking about; i dont know many people that are willing to flip the bill for hundreds of dollars of exhaust work on an explorer of all vehicles, heh.)

I just wanted to say that I do have it installed, and I do enjoy the way it sounds. It was really simple to install, taking off the old one was the hard part. It sounds good when it's idling, nice low tone. It kind of gets a little interior resonance going down the highway at 70... the resonance peaks at 70 that is, so I'm either going faster than that or slower, you choose. Good luck!

gibson makes dual inlet exhaust kits.

look through those choices for a '99 4.0 and u will see that some are dual inlet mufflers.

Well this is what I got in the box when it came in, the muffler with dual inlet, single outlet, a tailpipe, and a 2.5 flared to 3" stainless tip. This was for a 1998 4.0 SOHC Explorer XLT. So I think the 98 is one of the older SOHCs.

does anyone have the sound of what the flowmaster setup sounds like?

ah yes, forgot about the sports. I purchased mine from performance products. I checked, and they don't have kits out for the sport. I'd just go to an exhaust shop and have 'em custom build one, it's just as cheap if not cheaper, and you can choose any muffler you like.

i see your a new member from your number of posts, so you dont know my history of catbacks, heh. ive wasted a lot of money on a number of different setups with different mufflers, and i didnt like any of em. i like the gibson because its relatively quiet.

i figured id give it another shot, and i emailed gibson to see if they have any suggestions for me and others with the older sohc sport.

Mine isnt a 4.0L but you can hear my sound clips by clicking that link below.

update on gibson catback for older 2 door SOHC's: i just got an email from rep over at gibson. basically he said they never made a kit for older sohc 2 doors, they dont make one currently, and they dont plan on making one anytime soon. this sucks.

i wonder what the difference is between the 2nd gen explorers, they make a kit for a 2000 sport, i would think that the trucks are basically the same thing

I have the Gibson Cat back on my 01 sport. I really like it.

its not the fact that i have a 2nd gen X, its because i have the 1st generation of the SOHC on a 2 door. my muffler is a dual inlet, single outlet, while the newer sports, like black magics is a single inlet, single outlet. now, gibson does make a dual inlet, single outlet kit, but its for a 4 door, which doesnt really help me.

Just go to a custom exhaust shop.

Geeze, you would think that Gibson would combine the muffler from the 4-door kit and the tail pipe from their 2-door kit to create a kit for the dual inlet, single outlet Explorers. My Borla came with a drawing listing every single piece of pipe used to make up my system as well as part numbers. All they did was weld it together in the necessary places before shiping it. I would think that Gibson would be similar.
