i know that after some repairs, you disconnect the power from the computer so it begins its self tuning - like for the transmission shift points - it adjusts to your driving style

does the computer do this all the time?

i recently changed my spark plugs from those bosch +4 thingys (yeah i know - everyone was right about them being crap in a ford) - i was thinking it would not hurt to reset the computer by disconnecting the power - and its not a big deal to do - but i was wondering if adjusting the transmission shift points was a lifelong task for the computer or if it only does its adjustment for a specific time after being reset

The PCM uses an adaptive learning strategy for adjusting
to different drivers, and I'm pretty sure it's ongoing. Seems
I remember reading somewhere that it uses the previous
dozen or so start cycles, but not sure of that....?

Yes, PCM re-learnes all the time - it is a closed loop system when engine is at operating temperature.

As a side note, if you have the 4.0L SOHC engine you might be OK with those 4+ plugs, but for other engines there issues with them (the flame from those is not protruding enough in the chambers with "low swirl" and the mixture is not igniting properly).
Best spark plus for our trucks are the ones with "fine tip iridium".

adaptive learning

I suspect that most (if not all) adaptive learning for a 1995 PCM is related to reducing emissions. I think even in 2000 the Explorer PCM firmware makes few adjustments for driver characteristics. Transmission upshifts and downshifts are based on calculated engine load, engine speed, vehicle speed and programmed calibration constants.

I have been using inexpensive, discontinued Champion dual copper electrode Truck Plugs for more than a year with no apparent problems even with boost. However, they may not last as long as double platinum or double iridium plugs.

i replaced the plugs with the ngk double iridium fine tip plugs - the engine is the v6 ohv - i had put in the (i forget the name) boosted coil and wires trying to avoid replacing the plugs

the new plugs did not transform it into a nascar contender but they did make a difference
