Looking Good , Glad to see it on the road for you !.

Well thanks guys, it is nice to be driving it now. I am getting about 15mpg currently (running pretty rough) so there's room for improvement, to then lose it all in tires and armor soon ;-)

My float is stuck on the bottom of the tank , So I can't figure out what I'm getting very easily lol , Plus having stock 3.73 with 33"s don't help , but not having Overdrive makes it even worse lol .

I just fill it and then drive, then fill again to calculate. My gas gauge doesn't work either...lol

Looking good! soon to look better ;)

It's going to be a great rig for the PNW. Nice to have another 'drive it to the trails and drive it home' rig in the group.

Yeah it's gonna be a long time before I would be in a position to trailer this thing...lol

Plus the whole reason I bought the Expo was for the strength in the drivetrain and frame. It will perform the duties I need it to do without a problem.

I think it will perform Just fine :) . Mine surprised me Many times After My First few small mods

Got an exciting update...

My cruise control works!! I was not pressing the correct buttons before, it's amazing what can happen when you clean the buttons off from years of dirt/grease and you finally take a look in the day light.

Well a little more work today. Seafoam treatment for the crankcase, intake, and gas tank. New plugs and wires as well. Runs a hole hell of a lot better on all accounts. More power, starts easier, better throttle response, smoother idle.

Wires are generic Omni Spark replacement 8mm wires.

Plugs are Autolite double platinums gapped to .054

Big guy and little guy getting work done!!

Tom "grabbin ass" for his close-up

Well now that I've given it a basic tune up it is a much more pleasurable machine to drive. The added power is nice for passing, the smother idle is nice as well. I have noticed a bit of a slight burble coming back once warmed up and idling but other than that it's 100% better than it was.

Things to do now...

Replace easy to get to gaskets, and other leaking seals (if still leaking then I'll hunt down the rest)
Check and bleed brake system (rear tires tend to lock up or be touchy especially when cold)
Replace rusted off exhaust with at least a straight pipe turn down at rear tire
CLEAN EVERYTHING!!!
Check all running gear fluid levels
Check all bushings/bolts on all moving parts

After all that I'll begin the modifications (I'll probably put a decent stereo system in there somewhere but that doesn't count...lol)

Have you cleaned the Mass Air sensor yet?

Also, disconnect the battery for about 10 minutes to reset the ECM so it can adjust to all the new parts.

I'll try to get pics of the wheels this weekend when there's some daylight.

Thanks for the heads up and yes I did clean the MAF with the appropriate cleaner when this work was done.

I'll pull the cables this weekend

Well today I unhooked the battery, and let it sit for a bit. During that time I installed two pairs of Powerbass S-682 speakers. I currently have a Pioneer deck (that will get swapped out for my Alpine CDA-9831 when I get a new harness for it) running through the factory amp into the speakers. After running it for a day I am going to for sure bypass that factory amp...it's distorting at moderate volume levels and it's also got a crackle from time to time. In addition to the speakers I installed a small (really small) Alpine flex2 amp I had laying around (bridged down to 100 watts...lol) with a cheap bazooka tube knock off that was also just taking up shelf space. For what it is it sounds pretty good (having a "hatchback" helps with that).

So back to the battery being unhooked, after letting it sit for a good bit I started it up and it ran a little rough but I will admit that after driving it for the rest of the day it has improved. We'll see tomorrow morning how it starts and runs completely cold.

Well today we started a new problem, as I was driving to work my temp gauge spiked and I also noticed that my heat dwindled down to nothing (temp not fan speed). But about 30 seconds later my heat returned and my temp settled back down. So...I check my levels and I'm a bit low so I ad some water and go about my half day at work. I drive home, and at a stop light I notice that I'm leaking some pretty rusty water from under my ride. I keep a eye on the temp and it rises but not enough to warranty pulling over. I get home I check under the hood and it looks like my over flow tank spewed out the water that was leaking (no big deal) but my question is this. With it being a rusty/nasty water solution in there should I just go with the clean it out option first or do these symptoms scream thermostat to anyone else?

It wouldn't hurt to do a flush and fill on it first to get the crud out before you replace the Thermostat , I plan to do that here soon , noticed mine is a little odd colored , My Jasper motor has right around 100K on it and some of the gaskets need replaced , so after I get a different daily driver I will start on the actual repair and replace process on mine .

Well this is still going on, not as severe as the first "overflow" but still has me concerned. At this point I've noticed the top of the radiator near the cap and cap are damn near COLD after warming up. The upper hose is warm, the lower house is warm, and the rusty fluid in the overflow is warm...cap...cold to the touch. Quite odd of you ask me, any thoughts ladies and gents?

Once payday rolls around I'll be taking it in to have the entire system flushed and such. Until then I'll be keeping a close eye on things.

Well payday came and instead of paying the 100 bucks to have it flushed I opted for spending less more wisely and doing a little work myself. Being that I don't have any antifreeze left I'll be doing the flush of the rusty water concoction myself (with the prestone kit). I also purchased a new thermostat, radiator cap, and upper/lower hoses. I'll get to replacing this all tomorrow since I have the day off (lucky me!)

I would hope this at least fixes my current odd behavior, but I'm also hoping for some better cooling results...we'll see how it goes.

Did you check out the Ultimate flush thread for the first gen , if not its right here .. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=251416

. I would try and flush it and then drive it , and then maybe drain it after some miles to see if any other stuff comes out , it may help , or it may just need one good flush . couldn't hurt to drain some and check it after some miles .
