So there I was in the garage today, crankin my truck. Didn't start right away, had to turn the key back to the off position and then turn over again. This problem had occured before, but went away and now has come back. I cant figure out why this happens, becuase i can clearly hear the fuel pump priming. Also when it does fire it bogs down alot if i give it gas and seems to run like crap when cold, thanks for the help.

Try some injector cleaner. I've had that problem before and it was just dirty injectors.

if it starts to happen often replace your fuel pump relays that cured it for me

The check valve in your fuel pump is probably shot. Instead of turning the key to Start the first time, wait for the pump to stop whining, turn back to off, turn to on again and when the pump stops whining, turn to start. If it turns over, it's the check valve.

I know this sounds silly but there have been quite a lot of other members that have had starting problems and it turned out to to be the IAC stuck open. It only takes a few moments to check and it has to be worth a look.

Mine has a had a bad check valve in the fuel pump for a year and a half and does the same thing. I second that guess.

Well dude it could be a number of things as you see from all the other post so here is mine. My truck did the same thing, it was the fuel pump. Good luck.

Mine did that for 100k miles before the fuel pump finally went at 150k. Its most likely the check valve.

Yeah, and if it is the fuel pump, someones goin to die. This would be the third one in less than 2 years that ive owned it.

Mine doesn't run rough or anything, but it is taking longer to start than ever before. If it is the check valve on mine, is the valve itself replaceable or are you saying the whole fuel pump must be replaced to fix it?

Whole pump. It is an integral part of it...

Is it expensive? I am good at fixing things but I am not a mechanic... do you think me and my Haynes manual could manage it? ;)

If you have 4wd it will be a PITA because of the skid plates. Have a extra set of hands around and you should not have a problem. I think I paid around $150 for my new pump.

Yea, you can probably do it. I put a new fuel pump in my 91 about 2-3 weeks ago. Major PITA. First you need to remove the front side cover of the skid plate. Then the rest of the skid plate. Then the strap for the tank.....your haynes manual should give you some pretty good directions. You can see most all of the bolts you need to get to. There is one that is in the wheel-well bolted to the bottom of the frame, I did not see the this one when I tried to pull off the skid plate and had to go back and figure out where it was hung up. Wear safety glasses when you are working under it, especially around the driveshaft because rust will flake off the driveshaft and land in your eyes. I know this from experience because I didn't have a pair of safety glasses. Off the top of my head you will need:
13mm socket, preferably 6-point.
10mm socket
8mm socket
flathead screwdriver
assortment of socket wrenches and several extensions.
PENETRATING OIL---Do this ahead of time to make your life A LOT easier, PB Blaster works well, WD40 doesn't help all that much.
A suitable jack and proper jackstands, if you don't have these, you're getting nowhere fast.
Time, and Patience, and a good deal of strength to break loose the bolts.

I also used a saw-zall to cut off some of the rust seized bolts. The threaded metal clip-thingsthat Ford uses are not fun when the break. This is just from what I remember, if you have any more questions, just ask.

For some reason I didn't get e-mailed that anyone responded on this thread... in any case, thanks for the advise and directions on the pump. I'm going to do some testing and see if that's what's causing my issue.

Didn't mean to hijack the thread though :)
