1998 XLT UK version
Hello everyone

Have a 98 XLT 4.0L AUTO 6Cyld SOHC RHD export in the UK and am having a prolem with two things.

1st: passenger door wont lock with remote or door unlock button, but will with key and door push latch. It will unlock OK with remote and door unlock buttons.

2nd: When opening drivers door, alarm for lights on or key in ignition goes off all the time even with no lights on or key in ignition. If lights on alarm goes off with faster beeps.

I wondered if you good people had come accross any of these problems before and does anyone know where I can get a mechanics manual for the vehicle in the UK.

Thanks in anticipation.

Try a little WD-40 in the ignition switch and a good rap on the steering column. See if this stops your chime, and allows the lock to lock. Could be a stuck switch and your car thinks you left the key in.

Hi thanks for reply.....tried that didn't work.....took the 3 screws holding the column shroud out and found that there is a small blue electrical contact against the ignition switch....this had come out slightly...held it in and did the screws up again solved the problem.

Still no luck on the passenger door locking....anyone give me a hint on how to get the door trim off to look inside?

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Stevelex,

It does sound like a bad connection. To get the trim panel off. Remove the trim around the open lever, undo the two screws in the handle and lever the clips off around the two sides and the bottom. The trim then lifts off.

I've got a similar problem with all of my doors not locking with the front door switches/keyfob/keypad but they unlock just fine with all switches/keypad/keyfob, PLUS they all lock & unlock with the rear tailgate lock switch. Let me know if you figure it out. I know it's not the actuators b/c, like i said, off the tailgate switch they lock fine, it's just the front switches that wont lock the doors. Could this be a switch problem? Does the lock system run through the drivers master switch?

Thanks for the replies

My Explorer is the same colour as yours Howard. Toreador Red. I think.
Will try and take door trim apart over the weekend and let you know. I have a multimeter so should be able to do electrical checks. Loose connection is a good possibility.

Hi Buff....my passenger door doesnt lock with any of the 3 remote internal lock switches or the key fob but will unlock with all of them.

Let you know what I find. Cheers.

Solved

Solved the problem today
Managed to get door trim off and found that actuator had become detached from the door frame and although the actuator was working it did not have any effect due to no anchor point. It's held on to door with a rivet which had sheared.
Drilled a hole in the alloy of old rivet and put in a self-tapper screw with some washers under the head. Problem solved.
Don't know how long it will last but at least it'll do for now.
Thanks to all.
