I have an 02 XLT. I bought the Ex used and it came with 1 remote fob, that didn't work. Put in new battery and still didn't work. I purchased new ones on eBay, and still nothing. Is there something inside the truck that accepts this signal normally? Is this a common issue. It's just a pain to have to go to the drivers door and use the key, or punch in the code to unlock the doors.

It's possible that the vehicle lost its programming to the original fob. That, or it was never programmed in the first place. In this case, it's a trip to the Ford dealer to have the original one reprogrammed to the vehicle. From there, I think you can program the additional ones to it yourself. Don't quote me on that though...I'd ask at the dealer to make sure, unless someone else here has more knowledge about it.

Try reprogramming the fob. With the doors closed, turn the ignition on & off I eight times.(do not start) Leave in the on position when the locks lock & unlock. You are now in program mode. Press any button on the fob. It will lock & unlock to confirm link. Then press any button on all the other fobs. Should lock & unlock after each fob is linked. Turn ignition off. Locks will lock & unlock. Try fobs to see if they work.

In the owners manual it states how to program. I followed the instructions, on/off 8 times press any button..... I got the first initial try to work, but it will never work again. I was wondering if there is something that is losing memory.

Your GEM Module may require reprogramming. It failed on mine with less than 1K when new. This module also controls the remote door locks, remote liftgate release, auto headlights, remote door locks, auto driver seat and more. At 125K, mine has now crapped out completely and shows data errors for each function on the dash display. If a reprogramming isn't successful, a new module is like $600 with an additional $200 reprogramming fee and a mandatory $100 diagnosis fee. Ford sticks it too you like no others. I see a Kia in my future.
