if you are sure the childlock isnt on, then there is a high probability that the rods inside the door have become dislodged or broken... my yota has this ailment right now.....
same thing in my truck....the lady that owned it before me (or guy) had a little kid that did alot of dammage in the back seat area, and one thing i notice is that you must really really pull the back seat inside handles hard in order to open them...i have friend that will tell me the child locks are on
Both my rear door handles were bad when I bought my 97. There is a plastic tooth that breaks on the handle if it is pulled too hard. With new handles the doors still wouldn't open. The handle mech pushes on a thin rod that easily bends if the door latch is corroded. I flooded the door latch mech with oil and gently worked the door handles. After about 30 tries it started working again. Washing and rain cause the latch to corrode and these should be oiled periodically. Seems to be a common problem.
I've replaced 3 rear handles in my Explorer, none yet in the Mountaineer, though they don't feel the best. They are a defective part, and Ford must know this since the dealer told me they always stock a ton of them. Thanks Ford
