Drive shaft might be sliding back and forth.

Ongoing annoyance

Lube Kit on the Drivshaft spline - still clunks
Changed TPS - still clunks
Reset (disconnect negative battery cable) - still clunks

This has got to be some kind of internal trans flaw. It has done this for 50k miles so I am going to live with it.

Same problem here

Hi,

I have a 1997 Explorer SOHC 4L V6.

I have the exact same problem with downshift from 2-1 at slow stops. Mine only use to do this when OD was off.

Just Remand the Transfer case and Transmission on 153,000 miles.

Now after the reman it does it almost every time with a slow stop accompanied with the ABS break shudder.

Have any one solved this awful annoyance?

I have changed the TPS but no luck, it does the same.:(

Thanks,
Lucas

Same issue here. Many Explorers have this problem. I read up on this matter for several days last year, and I have yet to find anyone who knows how to fix it. I may try the ABS sensor cleaning.

I also replaced the wheel hubs that includes the abs sensors, so I dont think it is the sensors.

hopefully someone out there find the fix.
In the mean time I will look at the drive shafts.

I had this same issue awhile back on my 96 Explorer that has the 4R55E (yours is 5R55E) I hadn't figured out the whole issue but haven't experienced it for awhile...

Not sure if this will help as mine is an '04 Limited with AWD. Same problem, clunk when downshifting from 2-1 at slow speed. Mine was solved with a new solenoid block assy in the transmission, $500 part through my transmission guy. One of the solenoids had gone bad.

Interesting...thank you for the info...

Problem fixed

I got mine fixed after replacing the EPC solenoid.

thanks:)

I did the TPS mod a couple of years ago. After trying to sort out a flat spot in the engine, I've put the TPS back to its original position. It now has the 'clunk' from 2nd to 1st. Just thought I'd mention it because thats all I've done for the clunk to start.
Kev.

When I had my 4r44e rebuilt September 2015, I installed Sonnax ZIP kit. After the rebuild, the transmission got much stronger and upshifts were smooth. However, downshift (when slowing down) 2-1 had the thud followed by the ABS activation. I read that some of you guys have the same issue and sounded OK to ignore the noise.

Late October, I started having issues with my starter and then my flywheel broke. Not sure if the transmission rebuild/reinstallation caused this issue, but my flywheel was the original 2-piece weak design. Anyhow, with the new flywheel installed, I noticed that my downshift thud is gone. Hopefully, you might be able to solve your issue with replacing U-joints etc, but a partially cracked flywheel could be the culprit.
