DPFE sensor on 97 explorer limited 5.0

I got a explorer that was made in 8/96 and i am trying to locate the DBFE sensor. I got the code that my EGR was too excessive and was told to change this sensor but cant find it is there on mine or not? in my haynes it shows on the side by the oil dipstick but its not there. So did some research some said it was on the back of the intake where for 5 is and i dont see it there either

Okay, it's a crappy cell phone picture, but unless they moved it between '97 and '98, here's where it is (I have a '98 XLT w/ a 5.0).

I'm touching the top corner with my sausage-like finger, and you can just make out the DPFE. If yours is the original stock unit, it'll be metal, like this one. If it has been replaced, it'll be plastic. There are two bolts holding it in place, along with a wire harness and two vacuum lines.

You don't have the DPFE. That year had the internal EGR. You don't have an EGR tube either.

I too have a 97 xlt 5.0, and just like BtaRay I have a DPFE in the same spot. Back of the engine by the trans dipstick. Just a bit of advice when removing the hoses from the old sensor be very careful, very easy to break either the hoses or the sensor itself. Have you tried cleaning out the egr system? Sometimes it just gets clogged up and all you need to do is spend some time cleaning it up.

Jgilvin has the late 96 build date which should have the 96 engine which should have the internal EGR. The best way to tell is there will be no EGR tube on the manifold.
