I have a question which is based on an old closed threat. The original question was:

"I have a 2000 xlt sohc and
I just noticed that most of the times the ACC wheel (the one furthest to the right if your facing the engine from the front of the car) isnt moving all the time. It seems that most of the time it is still and then Ill here a periodic "click" and it will go on for a while and then stop again. The belt continues to go around it but its not moving. Is this normal!!! If it's not that what is causing it and how do i fix it?"

The forum answer was:
"Not to worry. There is a clutch in the pulley that allows the Air Conditioner to disengage from the engine when not needed. This saves the air conditioner pump when it is not needed, and saves mileage (Bonus!!!)

The click is the solenoid engaging the clutch and therefore engaging the Air Conditioner Pump. This is normal. Some newer cars use the Air Conditioner in colder temperatures as the Air Conditioner tends to dry out the air. This lessens the fogging of the winsheild. "

My question is however:

I had the same question because I noticed that click sound while my window was down. However this disengaging and engaging of the clutch happens every 5-10 seconds with my Explorer. It always shifts from running to stopping, back and fourth, every 5-10 seconds. (Neither A/C nor defrost are running while that happens) Is this still normal? What can I do to make it stop? Moreover it is the ACC (Access)wheel (the one furthest to the right if your facing the engine from the front of the car) like mentioned above. Is this really responsible for the a/c?
Many thanks for your advices in advance!

it will make that clicking noise on most all setting of ac and even heater. the only time i dont get the clicking noise is when i have it on heat and on the front vent setting. i guess that the compressors still runs on heat or a/c

mis-information/mis-understanding??
it is not an ACC / access wheel, it is the A/C pulley wheel if anything < which is part of your air conditioning (A/C) pump. Yes, since it's part of the A/C pump it would be responsible for the A/C.
If you don't want it cycling pull the fuse/relay for the A/C < check the owners manual for location. It's good to cycle the system, keeps the seals lubricated and refridgerant from leaking out of the system.

Does the AC still blow cold??

does it still cycle every few seconds when the AC on max and the blower on max?

if it does your charge is probably low.

when i bought my 2003 st this past winter i could not tell if the ac was working because it was below freezing out. well when i got warm sure enough it did not work.

the AC clutch would cycle on and off about every 5 seconds. (5 seconds on 5 seconds off) and would not blow cold air.

my friend does ac so he sucked down the system and was only able to recover 15oz of Freon. he recharged with 30oz (what it calls for) and it was good as new.

now it cycles on and stays on for a few mins
