About a year ago I started hearing a momentary grinding from the drive train whenever I’d go over a bump. It occurs at all speeds and only lasts until the shocks have stopped the bounce (4 new shocks). I’ve checked the U joints, front and rear, and they don’t seem to have any play in them. The noise seems to come from directly under the center of the explorer. Last week I hit a bump, and the grinding continued for 20-30 seconds. I decelerated and it finally ended. I continued, it happened again after another bump, and once again grinding 20-30 seconds. I shifted into neutral during the grinding with no change to the noise. The noise quit, I continued, and it hasn’t acted up for a week. There’s never been any noises from accelerating or turning, only the bumps. This grinding is definitely from the drive train and not the suspension, but I’m at a loss for what to look for. Transmission? Transfer case? Front Drive Shaft? U Joint?

check you driveshaft to see if it has been rubbing on something like a heat shield or something

Had similar problem. Went away once I regreased the brake caliper pins
