I was wondering how do you to know if your truck is "hunting" for a gear. I have a '99 v8 explorer with 45k miles. When the truck is cruising on a flat highway the rpm's slightly fluctuate upward with cruise control turned on. I've turned off all power accessories but it still fluctuates. When the rpm's surge upward it doesn't feel like the truck is accelerating. I assume if the trans "downshifted" that the truck would attempt to accelerate.
I bought the truck with 30k in 2002 and I just use the truck for long-distance vacation trips or occasional weekends. Other than that the truck works great considering it sits in the garage most of the time. I've changed most of the fluids when I bought the truck.
I'm a little concerned since I planned on using this truck for the family vacation this summer going from Chicago to Washington DC to Miami back to Chicago via Atlanta and would hate for a trans issue to pop-up on the road.
I was planning to take the truck on the highway with O/D off and if the rpm's still fluctuate would that rule out a tranny hunting problem? If so what's else could be causing the upward rpm fluctuation?
Thanks
