My kids both have archos tablets, so I didn't even entertain this idea. Both my phone and the older daughter's phone can provide wifi in motion.

Ok, so am i the only one who actually has them in an explorer right now? My problem isn't the price or how they play movies. I am concerned because they do not support the head the way the factory (non dvd) headrests do. To me that is a huge issue. The dealer said they area going to order some of the invision ones and see the difference. But if audiovox makes them, they may be the same. In which case, I'm taking them out. No movie is worth whiplash. If anyone else has a set, I would like to know what you think.

I do agree. One note, I noticed when I was reading that it did specify two way vs. four way movement on the headrest if the DVD option was ordered.

I assume that means up and down only with a DVD.

i don't think that charger will work for Ipads.. i think you need 2.1A chargers for Ipads.. You can't use an IPOD charger to charge an IPAD.

Does anyone actually have the invision brand DVD's installed in their explorer. I would like to get some more feedback on what they look like and how they compare (support wise) to the Factory Headrests.

I had mine installed last week by my ford dealer. They are the invasion brand and so far I think they're great. It keeps my Grandkids nice and quiet. Haven't heard, "are we there yet". Plays great thru fm station although I don't use that feature much. For me, they're worth every penny and the matching color headphones are a plus. My original headrest were returned to me.

After reading this thread i think i am going to cancel my Dual headrest option.. I like the Ipad idea, so can anyone else find a good solution to mount the Ipads(headrest) and then a power feed to them??
I have found the headrest mounts but am concerned that i will have a cord running from it to the power. I don't want it to look messy..

2 Ipad 64gig + $1500
Mounts = $200
Power cords = $75
Total = 1775
Plus you get the internet option with them..
I guess i have to add Bluetooth headsets, but still a good option..

Anybody thinking of this Mod as well?

a even cheaper option: http://www.amazon.com/Cinepal-Perso...55ZO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1300042952&sr=8-2
or google APMP101F. $99 from Amazon.com (sold by CircuitCity.com) + $5 for shipping...if you don't mind only 4GB internal memory + upto 32GB SD memory.

wouldn't it just be easier to hold the Ipad in your hand?

iPads can be dropped and when you have smaller kids, isn't an option in some cases.

I've got the headrest DVDs coming in my X. I took a look online at Crutchfield and the cost of these through Ford, including installation, wasn't all that far off what I was seeing out there for similar units. They all use FM modulation by default and if I need to I'll look into wiring it into somehow.

We'll be heading down to NC for Spring Break with our 4 kids soon, and the new X should be hear well in advance of that. Not only are we looking forward to the kids being able to watch movies, but we plan to bring one of our XBox 360s and let the kids play that on the way down too (given our Ltd has the 110V power in the back).

@sgt1411: i found something similar for you:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7041234&CatId=6954

if the link doesn't work, go to www.tigerdirect.com and search for "Bracketron Pro Series Stand with Headrest Mount For Apple iPad"

Very nice thanks for finding that.....may grab one this week and try it.

Regarding the other post about holding the iPad in your hand as apposed to mounting it. Small kids thats not an option, then in case of collision impact the iPad becomes a projectile inside the vehicle.

Given the story last summer about the guy being killed after being rear ended and his laptop computer coming out of his backpack and striking his head Im very conscious of that issue.

The other issue is cords hanging around when trying to keep battery charged and connection to audio in the iPad with wired headsets.

I prefer 100% wireless connectivity.

With all that said I will now completely contradict myself, sometimes my kids sit in the back holding the iPad with wired headphones and completely ignore the $1500 Ford DVD headrest directly in front of them.

The other parents of U12 kids know what Im talking about.

It's a far cry from the days when we went on road trips in my parents 1981 Malibu Classic Station Wagon with the 2nd and 3rd row seats down. My two brothers and I had full on WWF matches in the back while we drove down the HWY at 70MPH, no seatbelts anywhere to be seen.

I understand completely as I do have children, but just so you know, even with a mount for an Ipad in the event of a crash that Ipad is probably not gonna stay on that mount or any mount most likely and will still be a projectile, also if anyone does mount Ipads I would like to see how they look...still not quite sure I would like the looks.

I just ordered the "Grantwood Technology's Car Kit and Mount for iPad" off amazon for 35 bucks. I was going to go with a headrest mount one but i didnt want to have to take it on and off and loosen the aparatus over time...so the grantwood one is essentiall a case with a strap that hooks to the headrest post on the driver and the passenger and then hangs between the seats. I thought this would also make it easier for both kids to see the screen and help keep it away from them accidently turning the movie off

for 35 bucks ill give it a shot

So just to clarify, you can indeed play the dvd audio through the car stereo through FM modulation on the dealer installed DVD players? My dealer is telling me that cannot happen.

Also, on the dealer installed DVD players, are you able to play one DVD and view on both screens at the same time? The manual says that you can, but again the dealer is telling me that you cannot.

Looking for an answer ASAP. The dealer is giving me until tomorrow to make up my mind on the DVD headrests since they placed the order yesteday.

Thanks!

Regardless if you order the OEM Ford Genuine Invision DVD Headrest kit from the factory and it comes shipped in a box for dealer install. Or you order it afterwards from the dealer and they install it they are the exact same kit with exact same functionality. Same part number, same install.

Yes, the Ford OEM Invision Headrest DVD system can be played through 6 different FM frequencies but I found the audio very poor. In the manual too.

Again if it's the factory OEM Ford Invision DVD setup YES you can play the same DVD movie on both screens. One is a master and the other one is the slave which you just push the source button until it comes up.

My kids do it all the time when they actually agree on the same movie.

Most often they each watch different movies but it's a simple SOURCE button push to watch the same movie.

If they don't then its wired wrong.

Go online to the Invision website and see the Invision Revolution DVD system operators manual and it explains it well.

DVD Question

So, I piggy-backed this question on another thread but thought I should make a new one. Our car "should" be arriving within the next 2 weeks if all goes well and I have a couple DVD questions. I can't remember where the actual DVD disc are inserted. Also, who controls the DVD players...will my kids have control from their seats or will it all be through MFT and the front driver/passenger? Thanks!

In my 2007 Eddie Bauer, with the factory DVD system, the kids had wireless headphones and a remote control. Wonder if the new Explorer has this too?

I have the OEM Factory DVD by Invision.

SYNC and the DVD system are completely separate with 100% no DVD functionality from the SYNC screen.

DVD system comes with new larger headrests and the DVD slides into the top of the DVD screen unit which is almost the top of the headrest. When I put one in the DVD can touch the headliner. Each DVD has its own player.

You get two remotes and unfortunately the remote needs to be to the rear of the DVD headrest to communicate with the infrared transmitter in each headrest unit.

Not the best for really young kids so you will need to set it up for them.

One DVD is master and it can play a movie and then you can allow the other to view same movie or display its own separate movie.

Audio can go through headsets or you can tune SYNC audio to 6 different FM channels (See Manual for Frequencies) if you want movie audio throughout vehicle. IMO sound through SYNC is terrible due to interference but I guess every geographical location will have different interference.

Check out Invision Website for downloadable manual and you can read up before you get vehicle.

Its the Invision Revolution series

Our DVD is dealer installed but is it safe to assume it's the same one? I was under the impression that the two players could NOT show the same movie...am I wrong? I have a daughter and a son with a large age gap so it will be rare for them to want to watch the same movie anyway but in the random event that they do, it would be great.

My 7yo will be fine with the remote but my 2yo is going to need some help...good to keep in mind!

Thanks for your quick responses.
