DVD Headrest and other options questions

Our DVD is dealer installed but is it safe to assume it's the same one? I was under the impression that the two players could NOT show the same movie...am I wrong? I have a daughter and a son with a large age gap so it will be rare for them to want to watch the same movie anyway but in the random event that they do, it would be great.

My 7yo will be fine with the remote but my 2yo is going to need some help...good to keep in mind!

Thanks for your quick responses.

Yes I can guarantee it plays both the same or separate movies, as you well know in order to "Keep the Peace" this was the deciding factor for me.

Also when Im in the "Doghouse" my wife "The Warden" drives and I watch one movie while the kids watch the other movie.

Its done by a push of the "Source" button.

We actually have fun watching iPhone4 video through the DVD's as each one has RGB connections for iPhone4 cable or video game of your choice.

I still think I could have done a nicer iPad system for less $$$$ especially after seeing the new iPad2 but the OEM DVD is just to easy.

Thanks again...very excited to hear they can play the same or different movies. One more question...is there a "cover" of some sort? I have a friend and I remember she had some sort of cover to go over the headrest so if someone was looking in, you couldn't tell that there was a DVD system in the car. She had to park outside and we do as well.

I worried about that too.

Nothing comes with the system but I saw many online you can buy separately, kind of a leather hood.

The tinted glass really hides them well so I decided to hold off on covers so far.

I took another Posters advice from this forum and bought the NuShield screen protector for both headrest DVD's and the SYNC screen. Just because kids do strange things to electronics. Im waiting for delivery now.

Hey guys, just spent about $113 (before sales tax and S&H if any) to “create” my own rear seat entertainment system for my upcoming XLT. Sharing here for anyone who may be interested.

Get this Aluratek/CinePal APMP101F portable media player from Newegg for $90: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16855334002&Tpk=apmp101f. I bought it from tigerdirect because I had a coupon, and their price went up now. I received the player yesterday, tested it with video files such as AVI, RMVB, MP4, etc. So far, it plays without any problem, quality is good. This things support upto 32gb SDHC card, with the internal 4gb memory, you have total of 36gb for less than $100! I normally buy everything in black and was a little bit worry about the white color. When it came in, I was surprised, it’s white but with matte finish!

Now, you need this headrest mount bracket from Amazon for $23: http://www.amazon.com/PH-PAD-PB-HRM...EII0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1300413423&sr=8-1. This is actually a universal bracket for any tablets you can fit in, even though it is “tailored” for iPad. I received tonight. You have to remove all protective rubbers at all 4 corners and to cut down the center horizontal rubber by about 1/3 in order to fit the APMP101F. It’s very easy; only took me about 2 minutes, and it fits perfectly (even the curve in the back!)

FYI: I don’t have my XLT yet, but all headrest should be about the same and the hooks are adjustable anyway. I tested it with my Xterra for now; it looks great! The arm holding the bracket and the media player is also bendable to tilt the player for better viewing angle.

My TOTAL COST = $121 (with S&H); my kid is happy, and I don’t even care if she breaks it! I am thinking to get one or two more sets for 2nd and 3rd row.

Any questions, feel free to ask me.

Well done thats an outstanding system especially for that kind of $$$$

I might grab some of those for the 3rd row passengers. Seems the people who purchased them rate them very high for performance and that price is killer. As you say just throw it away if its broken and buy another one.

Only thing that concerns me is what happens to the screens with any type of impact?.......do they become projectiles?

I guess anything is possible.

Wired headsets or BlueTooth?

@Sgt1411: "Only thing that concerns me is what happens to the screens with any type of impact?.......do they become projectiles?" you better submit this senario to Mythbusters! :D

"Wired headsets or BlueTooth?"...you really expect bluetooth technology from a $90 media player? :P. I showed my wife what's included in the box besides the player; it's crazy...A/C wall charger, USB cable, USB cable extension, earbud type headphone, RCA red/white-to-3.5mm cable, blue/red/green-to-3.5mm component cable (yes, it is capable to output video to TV in HD format!)....for only $90? I cannot ask for more. I previously bought a $70 (on sale, $99 regular) Axion portable TV (also a media player) from BestBuy..I returned it the same week, it's bulky, besides the TV, playing video from SD card is a hit or miss, but "miss" being most of the time! I DO NOT understand BestBuy always carries such disappointing products!

Was going to respond here, but then felt the message was important enough to start a new thread. Check out my "Danger in your X" thread here >>> http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2681745#post2681745

My kids are the most important thing in my life so yes it concerns me if Im adding something thats a cheap alternative to the Carmakers authorized DVD system. Any item Ford authorizes inside the vehicle has been crash tested.

You wont care about price if the $90 screen becomes a projectile.

I wasn't expecting BT, but anyone with small children will agree, wired headphones, and hanging power cords in power points are more difficult to mange. Kids chew on them, pull on them, leave them in their ears and get out of the vehicle.

BT functionality is common place now so it's showing up in very inexpensive products.

That said, its a great system for the money.

Sgt1411,

This post is too funny! I am definitely putting this in my memory bank of greatest Explorer forum post! Thanks for jumping in and doing a great job of explaining that the dual headrest DVD players are totally independent.

Sounds like a good idea. You should make a suggestion for the DVD players to come with fitted covers. You can submit this on the Ford New Ideas website at www.FordNewIdeas.com. Thanks for always being so innovative.

Thanks for the tip on NuShield. I just ordered mine and now if I could just get the Explorer one of these days. Used KPR%10 as a coupon code on the NuShield site and got 10% off. Screen protectors are pretty expensive but I agree about kids and electronics so it is probably worth it.

I see the NuShield for the front LCD screen, but nothing for DVD screens. Which product did you order for those? The only thing I see for Invision (searching by manufacturer) is something that just says -
SHMD-0701-BX7 Order DayVue Only
I can call them, but would rather hear from someone hear who ordered them and can confirm they fit.

I went by the information in the earlier thread on screen quality from user janskim that indicated the dvd screens were the same size as the Dynavin D90 and to make sure you put "FORD EXPLORER '11- NU380A / FORD '11 INVISION DVD - NU369A" in the Customer Comments box when placing an order. You can find the Dynavin model under media players.

You want to order 154 X 86mm Dayvue for Invision. I worked with them to update the size from the originals they recomended which were Item: NU369A

Thanks for the update. I ordered based on your previous post and do you think the original recommendation for the DVD player will still work? I got the notice that it shipped yesterday. Of course I still need to get my Explorer first to verify it fits.

They will work, just center the shield on the screen. It will not cover edge to edge as you want a little bit exposed so you can have some way to get under the shield to remove it if need be. The problem I had was the left and right sides I felt the coverage could have been a little more. They recut and sent me the size I posted and it fits better. They may have adjusted their size already based on my feedback, best bet try out what you get and if you're not happy shoot customer support an email. I give them credit they are very responsive.

Thanks. I did get a response back from the vendor as well and they said I could just refuse shipment and they would send me out the new size. It sounds like it has a 1.5mm of a gap on each side and I agree with you that it might be easier to have that gap if I want to peel it off. It does seem like they have excellent customer service. Just wish I had my Explorer to check out the fit.

Factory DVD plyers and MFT?

Does the MFT control the factory DVD players in anyway? Like choosing if they operate independently or seeing the same movie on both screens?
