Well I took my 97 sport SOHC 4.0 to get smogged the other day (they were going to charge 60 bucks) and when they put it on the dyno it wouldnt shift (not even by hand) I took had just driven over there and it was shifting fine. I finally drove it some place else because I didnt like their attitudes and they put it on the dyno and tested it fine. I passed and it only cost 38 bucks. Any reasons why I wouldnt be shifting on the dyno. (It was running a little high, rmp wise, on the freeway the other day too.) Any ideas?

So no check engine lights? Both times it was tested on a dyno right? I'd guess it is operator error ( the smog tech)

At least you got it done cheaper at some other service place.

Hopefully your truck isn't suffering dreaded V6 tranny problems.

if it drove fine there and away, and it passed at the other place, i say stupid smog tech...

Also, isn't there a set price for emissions testing dictated by the state? If the first shop was charging more they can lose their license.

"Any ideas?........wouldnt shift (not even by hand)" I can't even figure out what that means!

Prices are different. Go to a dealer and you can pay $80 for a smog (about 1.5Hr of labor charge)

Go to a hole in the wall smog shop and you can often get it done for $30 with a coupon. There is a set fee for the certificate. IIRC that's 8 bucks.

^ yeah its all different kinds of prices but always 8 bucks for the certificate.

By hand i mean putting the car into first gear and then into second by using the shifter thats located on the steering column instead of letting the trans attempt to automatically shift. This was only done AFTER it wouldnt shift

could be that the first place had a bad dyno machine...could have been toying with your rear differential???

auto 4wd problem?
