I got a Dynomax muffler installed today and haven't noticed any change in sound.

The sound I was after is like 96limitedX's (found here http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=157727)
The part number on his is 17731, at the shop they only carried 17730 but said the sound would be just like the one I asked about.
I'm not looking for a a HUGE difference in sound but I did expect something more aggressive than stock.

My question is, is this because I had a different model installed(the guy said it was just the location of the pipe that was different) or do I just need to break it in? Maybe I need to run a stright pipe to the muffler?

I apologize for the possibly obvious questions but I'm new to this. Any help would be appreciated.

i had a friend who had a similar problem on his toyota truck...he got a flowmaster muffler with stock piping and you couldnt even tell it was on there...he finally shelled out for piping which was a 1/4" bigger and it made quite a difference in sound...it SHOULD be louder though i would think...have you listened to it from the outside yet while someone else was driving? my muffler is mild to medium inside and flat out loud on the outside...try that and maybe you will like what you hear

Nah man..I just had my friend drive it past me a few times and it didnt sound any different than the rest of the cars passing by. We went to a quiet area and still nothing, not even a subtle drone. The only difference is the acceleration is a little bit better which is nice, but I wanted the aggressive tone aswell. Anyway I checked the part numbers online and the 17730(the one I got has 2" piping, the 17731 is 2.25") Does that quarter inch make a huge difference..I know you talked about the piping itself but in just the muffler alone?

the sizing i was talking about was from the cats to the muffler, and then from the muffler to the tailpipe (all the way out)...i went to 2.5"...many people recomned 2.25"...i didnt notice any loss of low end at all...well i take that back, i had it dumped straight out of the muffler for a day and i noticed a loss of low end, but with the tailpipe (2.5") put on, it all came back i would try getting bigger piping from the cat all the way back...even if it doesnt sound a whole lot different, you should be getting a little better performance out of it...then, i guess try something new...imco sounds sick by the way on the ohv...good luck

Well thanks for the help and I may try that but if I just need to swap out this muffler with a 17731 model I would much rather do that. Like I said the only difference I can find is that the one I got is 2" and the 17731 is 2 and a quarter. Has anyone else put in a Dynomax Turbo on their OHV with stock piping and had a noticeably better sound?

I put a dynomax cat back system on my '94, and it sounds almost like a stock system...didn't make it much louder at all..

Yea man I have the same problem. But, It sounded BAD-@$$ without pipes.

glasspack definite change

Update: Last week I went back to the shop and told them I wasn't satisfied with the sound. Luckily the manager was there and advised me to get a Flowmaster. After a few minutes of wondering if the guy might just be trying to squeeze more money out of me, I asked to see both mufflers. I was surprised at just how much more solid the Flowmaster was. You can definately tell that it was well built. I was just afraid it would be to loud. I went ahead and agreed, I also told him to add 2.25" tubing. He charged me the difference of the mufflers (50 bucks), the tubing and labor for the new tubing($50 also). Altogether I spent $200 and I'm very satisfied with the outcome. It sounds really aggressive when I start it up. The tone at idle is deep, and it sounds mean as hell when accelerating from stop lights. Most of the time when the speed levels out I can't even hear it unless I'm going under a bridge. The only drone I can hear seems to happen when cruising between 55-60 mph and I have to be listening for it. Unfortunately I don't have a camera that records sound so I can't get a clip for you guys, but here are some pictures I took yesterday.

By the way its a Flowmaster 40 Delta
