I could really use some advice here guys. I was planning on getting a new exhaust/muffler for my truck later next month and was confused as to what would work nice on the 4.0 OHV. According to this site, and every other site I've looked at, everyone recommends Dynomax's Super Turbo or even the VT and no one has anything bad to say. Seriously, I could not find anyone who had anything bad to say about the Super Turbo so I'm really looking into that or the VT.

The part I need help with is the sound... I'm really torn because I leave at 4:30am 6 days a week and I am wondering if a Dynomax muffler would be too loud. I know for the winter it's not bad, but if everyone has their windows open during the summer, I don't want to be waking everyone up. If need be, I could crawl at 1500-2000 RPM or something until I get a block away to the main street, but my main concern is not upsetting my immediate neighbors by doing this 6 days a week. I have just a block or so before I'm in the clear, but that block is crucial.

So can anyone chime in on if a Dynomax muffler is loud enough to upset neighbors? I'm really looking forward to getting a new muffler, but I'm a little nervous that the muffler might be just loud enough to anger the block if they have to hear it everyday at 4 in the morning. I have no problem with accelerating very slowly, since there's no cars that early, but I'm getting paranoid that even that wont be enough. Thoughts?

Couldn't be more pleased with the SuperTurbo, and I have the "tinny" SOHC.
Haven't heard the VT on either 4.0L. If you look at the VT's internal design,
it appears similar to the "straight-through" moderately loud Ultra Flo muffler.
Another dilemma is the 4.0L is on the displacement borderline of two VT models.
I've read the spring strength is the primary difference. Also read reviews where
the valve would make very loud noises. I vote SuperTurbo w/o resonator.

Spintech sportsman series is by far the best sounding muffler on a 4.0. Ive had 4 different mufflers on the OHC 4.0 and it is by far the best. Not raspy and not too loud. not tinny sounding like Borla or Magnaflow.

i have a flow master suv 50 series with dual in dual out with turn downs in front of the rear axle it is loud but has a deep grumble to it and i love it

If it turns out too loud for your taste, you can always cut out a section of pipe and put a glass pack on where the resonator belongs. The Dynomax pipe doesn't have a resonator. It will also mellow out the sound a bit.

I have the super turbo. I regret ditching my resonator though. It is not to loud. You will not wake anyone up, the issue is without the resonator it drones in the cabin pretty bad around 2800rpms. It wasn't bad when I got it, but it is not that it has worn in. I plan to sound deaden the cabin rather than put the resonator back in. I took a road trip through the mountains and I wanted to blow my brains out on long hill climbs. Its not too loud outside. I still like my choice of mufflers though.

Several others with the sport have complained about droning. It isn't an issue on 4dr models, or even with the muffler. Its the sport model without the resonator.

Thanks everyone for the tons of replies. I think I'll stick with Dynomax and get the Super Turbo since there are so many people with such good experience with it. I'll just have to do some more research, but I'm guessing leaving the resonator is a good idea.

I want an exhaust that people will hear and know its not stock, but I'm not in a position to have it loud as can be. From what I've read on here, the Super Turbo offers a nice sound and a gentle purr, but shouldn't turn me into "that guy" around here. With most of my around town driving, the RPMs don't even go that high anyways, but its good to know about the potential problems. My biggest issue was not wanting to be too obnoxious.

I appreciate everyone's honest and helpful opinions. I know there's quite a few posts about mufflers/exhausts so I'm glad I didn't get nailed. I'm gonna start working on it early next month, just wanna get my ducks in a row first. If anyone else has any tips or comments, feel free to include them. I'll take all the advice I can get.

Maybe some other sport owners will chime in. Celly had told me in the past not to ditch the resonator in a sport. i should've listened. Like I said, not too loud the lack of a resonator makes a drone though. It doesn't bother me on regular trips its just long trips its kind of annoying. I don't think you'll be disappointed with the muffler though, and the price is great too. I had the same goal, you want it to be "not stock" but don't want it to be annoyingly loud.
