EGR Excessive Flow

I have this code, EGR excessive flow. My question is is it detrimental to the running of the engine or is it something I can leave for a time until I have the cash to by a new EGR valve. What does it mean exactly?

You are fine to drive with it, as it is.

90% chance that your problem is actually the DPFE, it is the sensor which controls the EGR valve. EGR valves rarely go bad on these engines, it is usually the DPFE that causes the codes related to the EGR.

In the US, we can get these DPFEs for about $50 US, although I have no idea what one would cost on your side of the world.

But like I said, you are good to go for awhile.

edit: just noticed your location is Albuquerque..............so my "your side of the world" may might make sense.

Thats nice to know I can leave it for a while. Thanks for the advice. By the way I live here in the US. I met my wife here and she wouldnt let me go home. :australia

I just got the same code recently. It turned out to be my DPFE sensor, just like Robb said. It cost $25 at the Ford dealer. Replacement took about 90 seconds and required no tools. However, since yours is a '97, it might be different from mine.
