Last week I got a Check Engine Light on my 97 Mercury Mountianeer ( just like an Explorer ) with 5.0. So I scanned it and the error message was " insuficiant ERG Flow". So I figured that the EGR valve had gone bad. Why I was changing the EGR valve I noticed that there were all kinds of small cracks on the small tube that runs fromthe EGR valve to the exhaust manifold. So I decided to pull the pipe out and try to fix the cracks. Well, when I was trying to remove the pipe, it pretty much just broke in half from all of the cracks. So here are my questions.

Is it common for that pipe to have all of those cracks in it? What is that pipe called and what will it cost me for a new one from the Ford dealership? I've checked around and none of my local outpart stores have it.

At least I found out were my exhaust leak was coming from.

my X has a erg problem so i have no idea

i cant help you with the cost or what the pipe is called, but i can tell you that after you replace the pipe if the light continues it might be a sensor. had codes for the same flow problem and it ended up being the dpfe sensor. if you type in the name of the sensor in the search for this website you'll find many people had this same problem.

Were is the sensor located? Is it hard to change?

i'm not sure where it is on your truck. i can tell you that it has two small vacuum hoses running to it and one electrical connector. most are found on the driver side of the engine on top.(sometimes a small silver box).mine was black. should be near the egr valve also. generally they are easy to change but again i dont know in your trucks case. usually between 55 and 75 dollars from the dealer. hope this is some help to you.

Now hold on and wait just a second. I hope that you really didn't pay 55-70 bucks just for the hose off of the EGR. Mine was cracked too when i replaced it so i just went to autozone w/ the original hose and we just matched it up with plain rubber hose that they have.

Hope this post is not too late...

i think that he means the long metal tube that is attached to the header. cracks in would cause the code to show up while that is out i would also clean the egr valve with some carb cleaner

Yeah I am trying to replace the metal tube too but can't find it anywhere. No one has one.

egr tube

The only place that I found that has them is Ford. I paid about $100.00 Canadian. That was for the 94 4L. Not a lot of fun to change either.

how in the hell do you get the bolts free from the manifold and the egr valve. are they normal thread? lefty loosey righty tighty? I can't get the damn thing free from the manifold. I have used everything. liquid wrench etc. this sucks I need to get it off so I can put my new tube on.

hit it with alot of wd-40 and try with the engine hot if that dosent work do this at your own risk cut the pipe off and get a socket a breaker bar and a pipe and do it that way

yeah thats what I did. I saturated it with liquid wrench then used a cheater bar. man that sob was on there. I ran out of day light so I will put everything back together tommorrow.
Thanks
