I was trying to change the stock radio in my 1994 Ford Explorer XLT. I bought a wire harness and then connected all the wires like instructed and the new one turned on but no sound came out of it. I kept trying to check the wires were fine when the two power ones (Ignition and memory 12v wires crossed and it sparked). after that, it stopped working. i tried connecting another new radio (i had two from black friday :) ) and nothing, then i tried installing the old one and nothing. now, there are other electrical problems. first, the light that normally turns on when you open the door is not working anymore, regardless if the car is on or not or open or closed. also, the optional lights in the same compartment on the roof dont work when you turn them on, regardless if the car is on or off, door is open or closed. lastly, the power lock doors normally lock when all doors are closed and the car is turned on. now, it locks the doors regardless if the door are open or closed. the power windows work fine. HELP! as my screen name suggests, im good with computers, but not with cars, so i need very detailed instructions (dont assume i know anything) like i have no idea where the fuse box is or what fuses i would change if that were the problem.
Thanks.

Fuse #1 in the under dash fuse panel works Dome / Courtesy Lights, Radio Memory, and Power Mirrors on a 2 Door Explorer. It should be a blue 15 amp fuse. Fuse #1 is located all the way across from the flasher relay next to the silver large circuit breaker.

As I stated in my e-mail to you the fuse panel is located to the left of where your legs would sit when driving, also left of the steering column, under the dash. It is probably covered with a black snap off cover. The cover faces the floor of the Explorer. Fuse # 11 is a 15 amp fuse (should be blue) located directly in the center of the fuse panel. It is the fuse that works the radio power.

Look at the fuses in the fuse panel. If you work on computers I'd take it you have your own volt-meter. When you look at the fuses you will see what looks like test points on the outer end of the fuses (both ends). You can ground your black meter lead to a place on the body where the lead will stay in place. Take the red lead and touch it to each of the test points on the fuses in the fuse panel. Be sure to have the ignition ON as the radio works when the ignition is on. You should be able to identify any and all of your bad fuses by checking both test points on ever fuse. You should see at least 12 volts on each test point on every fuse. Any you don't have 12 volts on both ends of pull out with the fuse extractor that should be on the back of the fuse panel cover (or needle-nose pliers) and look at the bridge in the fuse. It will be broken if the fuse is bad. DO NOT replace any fuse with a larger one (you know that already if you work with electronics). If you haven't cleared your short circuit you will blow a new fuse right when it is installed.
