It has been a while since I've posted here. My 1997 has a problem with the battery draining. The interior lights remain on with all doors and glass closed. :( Removing fuse #27, 10 amps, will eliminate the light problem but according to the manual, it also seems to control something with the 4x4 system, I am not sure what, hoping it is only the dash lights. Can anyone help and confirm this?

I think the main problem is that something fell off the driver door, just below the door latch. The passenger side has what looks like a deeply dimpled rivet, the driver side has a hole. I'm thinking it is a switch that somehow senses the door being closed.

Thanks for any help.

There is a switch in the door latches, that's what gives you the door ajar light on the dash if a door or the back hatch is open and it will cause the courtesy lights to come on. There is also a relay that controls the interior lighting. All of the interior lighting is controlled by the GEM, Generic Electronic Module.

Thanks for the response, I understand all that. Trying to find out what, if anything other than interior lighting fuse 27 controls. I'm hoping I can get on the road before the weekend traffic by just pulling the fuse until I have time to dig deeper and permanently repair the problem.

Fuse #27, interior fuse panel under the dash, supplies power to:
Glove Box lamp and switch
Transfer case shift motor
Interior lamp relay
Accessory delay relay
Engine compartment lamp
Map/dome lamp
Left and right vanity mirror lamps
Overhead console

According to my service manual (for a 96 Explorer), fuse 27 controls:
Glovebox lamp and switch
Dimmer module
Transfer case shift relay
Interior lamp relay
ACCY. delay relay
Engine compartment lamp
Vanity mirror lamps
Overhead console

Power is supplied to fuse 27 through battery saver relay

Instead of pulling the fuse, try the interior lamp relay. It's in the Aux relay box #4, left rear of vehicle, above wheel well.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help. I'll post what works.

That was the one. That puppy was hot. Really apprerciate the help, I never knew there were relays back there..

Interior light problem - Door Open Message- 04 Explorer

When the engine is cut off, the interior lights don't go out. I also get a door open signal on the dash message center - pressing reset makes the message go away but it returns on next entry - When I exit the vehicle at night, the headlights will cut off automatically but the interior lights and the courtesy lights on the mirrors stay on - Help!

Manually inspect the door frame - include the rear window/tailgate - open/closed switches.
You should be able to manually activate (finger, or screwdriver) each and find at least one switch that is loose, or dirty.
If neither, check electrical connects.
If this fails, are doors closing tightly?
Lean on each on and observe effects...,
