electrical problem

Hi there, I have a 1992 ford explorer and am hooking up a boat trailer. The problem is that every time I put in reverse with trailer hooked up it keeps blowing turn signal fuse. If the trailer is not hooked up no problems. I have a 1992 ford ranger with same trailer hooked up everything works fine no problems. What would cause this to happen only when hooked up to the explorer?

Are you using the factory installed tow wiring setup on the explorer or did you tap the wires to hook up the trailer?

I hooked the quick connect inbetween the relay plugs as shown for factory install. I went to pull n save and took the quick connect off of a 1991 explorer.

Are you talking about the white connector behind the bumper where you can connect the tow adapter to?

No it is behind the left rear jack compartment, behind the reservoir for wiper washer. That is where the relay is located for the turn signals. The manual shows a inline t-connecter goes there. This is a square ends grey connector not the round ends black connector. I tried all the other connectors even going inbetween the connector coming off the left rear taillight that hooks up the license plate lights. I also tried a taillight convertor coming off the t-connector. I get nothing but taillights, not brake or turn signals. The only way everything works is hooked up between the relay connector. The only problem is when I put it in reverse the fuse blows under dash. This only happens with trailer hooked up. With no trailer hooked up everything works fine and it doesn't blow the fuse.

Simple answer... don't use reverse :

I'm not sure where to go with this. They changed a lot of the wiring from 91-92 to 93-94 models. If it is the same as my 94, there is a white connector with a cap on it behind the bumper that you can connect a trailer adapter to (oem ford part)

I don't have access to the older wiring diagrams so I can't even look at them to see if there is a difference. Hopefully someone else with more experience will see this thread and can be more helpful.

either you have the wiring wrong on the truck or the wiring on the trailer is messed up. I'm inclined to believe its the trailer wiring, but I've definitely seen cases where it was the wiring on the truck.
