I am planning on getting a Lanzar opti500 to power 2 Alpine type R's. The specs on Lanzar's site say that it puts out 500x2 watts. Does this mean I need power cables that can handle a 1000 watt amp or do i need cables that can do 500?

I'm gonna jump in here and say that up to 1000 Watts, I would run nothing less than 4 gauge wire. That said, I would run 4 Gauge wire from the battery to the back of your Explorer, and then if the 4 Gauge is too big for that amp, then I would put the 4 Gauge into a Dist. Block and then from the out on the Dist. Block run 8 Gauge to the Amp. That way you are also set up to run a multiple amp system with the Dist. Block there ready to be used for an amp for the door speakers and whatever else you would have a use for.

This is just my .02 cents though...anyone else have any thoughts?

make sure you have a 150 amp fuse as well when you start going into the larger gauge wires. I think that is the minimum rating for 4 ga. The kit for 1000 watts should come with that. Also, i think it is recommended that it is no longer than 18" from the battery or the alt, depending on where you put the wire.

man...I have a 5 gauge kit with a 100 amp fuse
