that light is for more than just the parking light. it also indicates that you may have a problem with your brake system. if the pedal is up all the way, climb around under your truck and look for brake fluid leaks. then, like jim said, check the fluid leven in the resevoir.
actually, ive had this same problem, try backing up at maybe 5 miles and hour, and the firmly depress the brakes, not hard enough to lock them or break your neck, but firm. you should hear a clunk, thats your parking brake readjusting automatically. you may have to do it 2 or 3 times. it worked for me, try it and let me know if it works
thanks for the fluid info...unfortunately it didn't solve the problem. the regular break petal goes all the way to the floor and the truck doesn't feel like its going to stop.
I'm gonna pull things apart this weekend.
anyone have any suggestions as to where i should start looking?
maybe the master cylinder is shot?
Before you try replacing anything, try this first. Take off the electrical connector leading into your master cylinder. This connector should have a three wire connector, join a jumper wire (a staple or bent wire) into the purple/white and purple/yellow wires in the connector. Leave the switch unplugged and turn on the vehicle. If the light does not turn on, then you have a faulty master cylinder reservoir sensor. I hope that's all it is, as this part is inexpensive but can only be purchased new from Ford...or from a junk yard .

i had the same problem with my 92, just put a peice of black tape over it, because it drove just fine. i tired several tiems to find the reason with no solution found
I think it's just a little sensor that detects brake fluid levels. If you keep up on your fluids and keep your car well maintained, it's kind of a worthless sensor...unless you spring a leak while moving.
