engaging 4x4

1997 XLT,
When i engage 4x4 high, i get a loud "clunk' when i turn also getting this clunking sound.
4x4 low, i engaged this and immediately after the loud clunk it jumped back into 4x4 high (according to the lights on dash)

Spoke with the dealer, he said this is normal sounds, and i should try
reversing a little nd try to re engage 4x4 low.

As you can read i'm new to this and would like a second opinion

the clunking is normal.... and 4wd low range isnt supposed to engage until the car is stopped, you are on the brake pedal, and in nuetral or park (clutch depressed if a stick) and then try to shift into low range....

Mine will only shift in neutral, not in park.

That is right. Park will not work, the transmission has to be in Neutral...
