So I have an 06 Explorer 4.0L, the engine died while I was on the road. It wouldn't start right away after I coasted to a stop. After it was towed back to my house and sat for a few hours, it was able to turn over but it will not fire. While driving I heard a metal clanging noise that would speed up as I accelerated. I've put a code reader on it and the only two codes it pulled were for the EGR valve. I know that would not prevent it from starting. I know the three basics for starting an engine: air, fuel, and spark. I've gotten the first two, will attempt the third when I'm home from work. Any help, or theories would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It could be the timing chain. If you can look through the oil fill with at light while cranking to see if the camshaft is turning. Also while cranking doe it have any not normal sounds?

My guess, over the last few years your timing guides have been slowly crumbeling into the oil pan, plugging up your oil intake like they so like to do. The lower oil pressure caused your tensioners to fail, increasing the issue to the point that one of your timing chains broke. This intern caused the valves to be struck by one of the pistons causing a catastrophic failure. Pretty common with this poorly designed engine by ford. Do a compression test and if any cylinders are low, you can grab a bore scope and check for valve marks on the piston, or just start shopping for a replacement engine at a wrecker.
