Engine knock

Fairly new here (love this site!). I have a stock '93 XLT 4X4 that recently started an annoying knocking sound. I don't hear it when in park or neutral, only when in gear, especially when I'm stopped at a light. Stays consistent, doesn't increase with rpm's. More of a knock than a ping. Thought it was an exhaust leak at first, but took it to a muffler shop and everything looked fine. Any ideas? Lifter?

If you are saying the knock doesn't vary with RPMs, it wouldn't be a lifter. I'm sure others will have ideas.
