Engine noise

I have an 04 eb 4.6 with an engine noise during acceleration. It sounds like a metal on metal scraping/sucking noise like the air box is leaking. It's not there when the truck is ideling I checked the pully"s and they look good. I brought it to a mechanic and he said all 4.6's make that noise. I find that hard to believe. I bought this truck with 60k about a month go. Thanks

Is the noise new, or has it always done this? Are you very familiar with it? Do you use a stethescope to daignose and trend noises?

My first thoughts are timing chains/followers - not an uncommon problem with some 4.6s. Should not be an imminent failure item if you have been paying attention to it.

The 4.6 is not a noisy engine when in good condition, I've had several.

(Re-read the OP - okay, you have not had it long - did it make this noise when purchased and did you have a mechanic check it out prior to purchase?).

The mechanic said it is a good truck. I do have a warranty(I bought it from a dealer) so I would like to get it fixed before it runs out. I thought the timing chain made a different noise. Thanks

Good to have the warranty, since metallic noises are not normal for this engine. Good luck.

My mounty has the 4.6 also and makes a sucking air sound on acceleration also. It has always done it (since ive owned it 2.5 years). There is a thread on here about it but i cant remember if anyone ever found the cause. Ill see if i can find it

i love the 4.6 ford came out with i seen these engines run hott ran out of oil keep on going i even seen them go over 400k
