I have a 2002 4.6 V8 with just shy of 70k on the clock. The vehicle has been well maintained, but it has been one thing after another lately with stuff failing that shouldn't at this point.
About a month ago, my engine started making some noise. I isolated the noise with my stethoscope to under the left valve cover in the vicinity of cylinder # 6. I drove the vehicle and after about 5 minutes of driving to get it up to operating temperature, the noise was gone. That was about the extent of my diagnosis as I did not have the time or the expertise to go further.
Off to the dealership it went. They diagnosed the noise as being due to bad lash adjusters. I had them replace what they believed was causing the noise and paid accordingly.
A week and about 300 miles later, the noise is back. I brought it back to the dealership and after they started it up 3 times cold on different days and didn't hear the noise, I went to pick it up. When I picked it up and had them observe it with me, it made the noise for literally one second and went away so I took it thinking maybe, just maybe, everything was fine.
Now, after letting it sit for another day in my garage, the noise is back once again. This time, it's somewhat faint around cylinder # 6 and the entire left side and is quite noisy around cylinder #1 on the right side.
My knowledge is limited here, but with what I do know (well, what I think I know), I do not think I have an oil pressure or pump issue because the sound goes away once warmed up. It is probably worth mentioning, but I’ve been told by the dealership not related, that I regularly have to fill this thing up with coolant after a couple hundred miles. If I fill it up to the top of the cold fill range, it will be at the bottom of the range after a couple hundred miles. Two dealerships have performed pressure tests and have found no leaks and no evidence of a leak including in the oil itself.
Has anyone else had this issue or does anyone here have any ideas on what to start looking at that would be causing this?
I apologize for the length of this post. Thanks in advance for your help.
