Ok....first let me say I am by no means an expert. Having a problem.

I have a noise, that I would describe as piston slap or spark knock. It only happens between 2400 and say 2800 RPM's and at idle speed in park.

I have switched to 93 octane, but it does not eliminate the noise.

I have used various additives that claim to quiet engine, valve and lifter noise, but they didnt work either.

Anybody know which way I should go here?

The dealer told me this is normal for an explorer with 85k on it.....I dont buy that!

Yeah, the dealer is wrong saying that it's a normal occurrence. It's very hard to diagnose a noise over the computer. However, you can rule out preignition knock/rattle if it's making the noise at idle. Pre-ignition "rattle" will only occur under load.

If you pick up a Haynes or Chiltons manual for your model they have a good noise diagnosis section which helps with trouble shooting.
