At low revs my engine has a distinct rattle which disappears at higher revs /speeds. Its a 1998 model and the local mechanic says the timing chains need replacing but its a job he cannot do. My only option is to go to the main Ford dealer for the job...I haven't asked about prices yet, but its going to be high hundreds. Is there anything else that could cause this noise (it's like a fast ticking).
I have a feeling I will have to scrap the car.....in this eventuality is there a specialist explorer breaking company or are there tips on where to sell it?

The timing chain rattle is very common. It's a fairly big job, but can be done by the DYI mechanic. There are tons of threads on this issue, some have detailed instructions with pictures. Your mechanic should be able to do the job for you. You may only need to replace the main tensioner, not the chains as the tensioner is what fails.

UK timing chain shops

According to posts I've seen on the UK Explorer Owners Forum there are two shops in the UK that have a good reputation for the timing chain replacement. Justin in Newport does the entire set for £650. There is another shop in Aylesbury. I don't know if either location is close to you. Try posting on the UK forum for more information.

Is this only a problem on the V6 or V8 as well?
