When I had the engine rebuilt in my bronco II it cost me $5000 with everything I had them do, I got raped on the deal but the engine ran so nice and it got like 20 miles to the gallon on that old V6. I think the only thing they kept was the block from the original engine everything else was brand new.

damn, thats a lot, i could get a new engine for that price installed

Sometimes its better to buy a remanufactured short or long blpck than to rebuild your existing motor.

The $5k is way too much....

WOW you paid too much. and 20 MPG isnt a whole lot for the 2.9 Liter. My bronco II gets like 25 MPG on highway.

Depends upon what level of rebuild you get. Some might call just replacing the rockers, pushrods and lifters a rebuild, or it could be re-ringing the motor, or it could be a complete overhaul, gutting everything and starting over. It could also be inbetween. If you list what you're gonna have done, we can probably get you a rough estimate.

Check out reconditionedengines.com They have 4.0s for $1199 with 5yr/100K warranty. Your chassis will rust off before you burn a drop of oil. With labor you will be somewhere around $2500. That price includes shipping and return shipping for the core. A great deal if you ask me.

Further, you might find a good builder in your area and not have to deal with shipping.

Good luck....

but for a 91 I would love peace of mind knowing it was "new." I spent $1500 just to get a couple of cracked heads replaced. If I knew then what I know now...

new engine 2 years ago

my new engine cost me $3000.00 TOTAL including labor and a 3 year warranty, and this was a local shop in northeast FL. Didnt have to have it shipped(since the shop was local and had it in stock), but Ive seen prices a tad bit lower on the net, but then u need to pay for shipping and have the labor done and if something goes bad with the engine you have to deal with an out of state company, yada yada yada. Stick with a local merchant so if anything does go FUBAR, you can do a face to face.
by the way, this was ONLY the engine, no alt, a/c, starter, wires, all that crap. my local shop gave me a list of OTHER things that should be bought, but since they recomended a new thermostat,,WHICH I just installed a week ealier I KNEW they were trying to JACK me for extras. I told them to just do the ENGINE

When I re-built the engine in my old F150 300 (CID)/ 4.9l I think it cost me around $2500-3000 or so. I bought the short block from Ford and re-used the majority of the other parts. Replacing what needed to be replaced. I didn't pay anything on labor since I was the labor. It really wasn't that difficult either. I also had a LARGE garage to do it in which helped out a ton. I also layed out a large peice of plywood on top of some saw horses and then laid all the parts I took out on that and drew lines around them and labled them. Made it really easy to put the whole thing back together.

if i were to rebuild, what are some of the other components to replace while the engine is out for PM with a 91? alternator? power steering pump or fluid case? any ideas? or is it as simple as it ain't broke so don't fix it?

I rebuilt my engine almost 2 years ago and it was around $800 for the rebuild kit. I used the Haynes manual as a guide and did it myself. I had the heads done for $200 including fixing the cracks. The one thing I would have done different was to bore the engine .030 instead of leaving it stock. Depending on the the amount of wear on the walls. REPLACE the push rods, lifters, cam and yes the water pump if you can.
They are a pain to get out but if you have the timne and patient you can do it yourself. Get the engine hot tanked and honed at a good machine shop if you don't need to bore it out. Have them replace the cam bearings at that time.
Keep everything clean and ORGANIZED right down to the last nut and bolt you remove. Use zip locks and label everything.

Good luck
