Hey,

I have a 97 SOHC and recently it has been acting funny. Over the past two days it has sporatically died twice. I have a remote starter built into my alarm system and have had it and used it w/o any problems for 3 years or so. I usually start my car as I am getting ready to leave to go outside. I started the explorer, unlocked it, got in it was about to put my key in and it died with the key about 6 inches from the ignition. I put the key in and then pushed the brake to start (habit) and i heard the click from the remote start disengaging (brake switches from remote to key). This all happened within a few seconds so the remote start didnt have time to try to restart the car or anything. The car didnt sputter or shake it just turned off like you turned off the key, not as if it is starved for fuel. The next day (yesterday), I remote started inside my friends house after being there for around 45 min. and was walking outside to the truck. It again turned off. I was like what the crap and then the remote start restarted it and it was fine (is supposed to attempt 3 starts). It hasn't done it again yet but I am going to start starting it with the key and letting it idle for a few just to rule out the remote starter. Today at work, one of my coworkers was printing out flyers to sell his 2000 explorer and when I asked why he said that it was because he just got it back from the shop and was sick of putting money in it. He said he just spent around 1k on a new computer because it started dying (just turning off) and then started doing it on the road and he said his steering would lock up and stuff, did it twice, brought it in and it was the computer. I don't think its the IAC as I have driven vehicles w/ faulty IACs to the shop for people and it isnt behaving that way. Any ideas? Whats the chance its the computer? Also, I drive on winding roads alot and don't want the steering to lock up on a turn at 45 mph, I could handle straight but not a sharp turn. Is it possible to lock up in the on position? I have been in cars before that were dead (battery) and you couldnt unlock the steering when it was put in gear to move it.
Thanks,
Matt

The steering won't lock if the engine dies. You will loose power assist, but the steering won't lock up!
