99 xlt
Hey all. Mr 99 xlt has the death rattle. I was ready to fix it this weekend but I stumbled across a wrecked 04 with the 4.0 cammer motor in it and can get the motor for $ 600.00. It currently has 44,000 miles. Will this motor work with my computer? Will it swap in ? I dont mind a few changes or problems along the way, just want to know if its doable.
Also was the cam tensioner (death rattle) issue resolved by 04?

Thanks for any and all help.

Great site

i took a 2004 4.o sohc and put in my 99 4.0 push rod, first problem trannys wont line up perfect you can get all the bolts in but one but it is very exceptlable. second problem altenator wire must be ran new no big deal. third problem i ran across the biggest, diffrent size injectors so the old pcm runs real rich and if you us the pcm from the newer engine you will need to take all the pats and install with the engine or have the pcm reprogrammed to turn pats off, i have yet to find that option yet as two ford dealers told me you can not turn it off and aftermarkets are saying you can for about $500 other then those few minor details the truck runs fine oh also you need the exahaust from the new engine as the old headers are diffrent

Hi everyone,
I am new to this forum. I have a question about an engine swap. I currently own a 1998 ford explorer.4.0 v6 sohc. Had the timing chain guides fixed, now there is no power at takeoff. Timing chain didn't have any slack in it, looked good. Compression tests are all 130 on pass side and 50, 30, 80 on drivers side. (front to rear)Thinking of swapping the engine out for a 4.0 ohv. or a v6 from a 1996 mustang. Which would swap with the least amount of hassle? I can get either motor. The mustang motor would be free (comes with the worn out car). Has anyone done this swap? Any info would be appreciated.

the ohv is far less powerful than the sohc, but more low end torque.
if you use the ohv you will need a new tranny, and lots of new wiring, so it will take alot more work.

kinda your call, whether you wanna spend money on a new sohc to bolt in, or spend a little less money and tons of time to put a less powerful motor in.

If this started after you changed the timing chain parts, then one would assume you have a cam shaft out of time.

Didn't mess with the timing chain itself so figured it would be okay. The guides were all broken up. Ran great at first, then took it out for a spin two days later and no power. Just kinda sits there. Guess I'll have to look for a v6 sohc.
Thanks.

Found a motor for $800.00 at a junkyard. Its from a 2000. They couldn't tell me how many miles it had on it, as it was already pulled and sitting in a shed. So far disappointed with it. Got it home and there are parts on top already pulled off. Couldn't tell until I took off the black plastic piece that shows the 4.0 sohc on it. To far to take it back without at least trying it out in the truck. Wish me luck. Starting on changing things out tomorrow.

motor info ???

I am getting really discouraged now. Does anyone know how to tell what yr a motor actually is? This one is suppose to be from a 2000. On the heads it has
M 25 4 97 (right side)
A 25 4 97 (left side)

Motor (on block in rear)
VZB93214

Valve covers (on sticker on right side rear)
? I GY63AA

04V 30 2 97

Anybody know how to find out what these mean?

(these are what year motor it is from. so if it is a whole motor then it is that yr.)
