I have access to a newer hardly broken in 1996 Explorer motor.

I am curious if it will fit into a 1992. the major difference, 1992 is manual the 1996 is Automatic. they are both 4.0L

the block should work but is not plug and play. either use the sensors from the 92 or the harness and computer from the 96. manual or auto shouldn't matter, either should bolt right up.

The plan was to keep the 92 sensors.

mind you this is all because I am to lazy(not hardly, just havent figured it out after two days) to figure out how to get the damn fan clutch separated from the water pump after rounding the nut and bending two tools, and havent even broken it free. In the meantime i have a person who just recently totaled his 96 and was about to part out the motor

Swapping engines is exponentially more difficult than taking off the fan clutch.

Are you trying to change the water pump? Are you trying to turn the fan nut the correct way? I believe it's reverse threaded...

Further, the 96 engine is obd2 and your 92 is obd1. Wiring harness, computer, all is not compatible between them. What about the drivetrain? You never mentioned whether 4x4 or 4x2, for either engine and another potential complication. So, it's doable but the hard way to go about it. Better to do v8 swap than this one.

Also, if the 96 has the 4.0 SOHC engine, then you're opening a whole new can of worms. That swap will be exponentially more difficult and labor-intensive!

so you guys hit on everyone of the same questions I asked the guy with the motor.
I have concerns over it as well. In theory it works but in truth it works with a LOT of extra work.

as for the water pump and fan clutch. yes I am replacing the water pump. It is Right hand threads.

My thoughts as it is my truck was to simply remove radiator and then remove water pump with clutch fan still attached. I have all new equipment for clutch fan and water pump. in the middle of doing this, it was mentioned that there was a '96 motor available for a couple hundred. He would tow my truck to his shop do the swap for me and be done with it. I started asking some BASIC questions pertaining to emissions. I believe his is EGR, mine is not.(federal) his is 4x4 mine is 4x4. I personally think keeping what I have and just replacing bad parts is the correct way to do this.

I am disabled and have some issues working on the thing myself, though I will endure pain to get it done if i have to.
