Last year my radiator leaked internally filling my transmission with engine coolant. Ever since the transmission rebuild the Explorer never has been the same. I had to take her back to the transmission shop three times and the transmission still has weird issues, (won’t engage in drive if the car is warm) I haven’t been able to get her running smooth since the rebuild and I’m about ready to throw in the towel and sell her, but I’m giving her one last good try before I do. :fire:
At idle the car shakes like she is missing a cylinder. At random the car runs like crap with no CEL, and then sorts itself out again and feels like she has full power. I get around 12-13 mpg and my check engine light turns on and off intermittently, sometimes it stays on for less then a minute, sometimes all day usually only after the car has warmed up for the day. The light resets every time the car is turned off. In my quest, I tried to get some more work done on my transmission under warrantee but the tranny shop refuses to touch the car until all codes are fixed. Now I can’t register her because she won’t pass smog as the CEL randomly turns on and off.
I’ve read almost every post on this list-Thanks for the ideas thus far
Here's what I've done so far:
- Professionally rebuilt tranny
- Radiator tranny cooler capped and stand alone tranny cooler placed in front of radiator
- Cleaned Mass Air Sensor
- Cleaned Idle Air Sensor
- New Platinum Bosch spark plugs
- New Ford Plugwires
- New Air cleaner
- 2 New O2 sensors
- Paid $500 bucks for other "non fixes" --> the garage then tried to rope me into $500 more to replace my CAM position Sensor. After doing some research I turned them down because I found out that my Vin X 4.0L OHV doesn't have a CPS according to the Chilton manual.
- Bought Autoxray EZ-scan 6000 to help trouble shoot.
After buying the scanner, I have run all three scans, a Key on engine off, Key on, engine running, and a Engine running Data capture. The scanner just keeps giving me a 111 system pass code when the CEL is off, and a “Vehicle is not responding” message when the CEL is on. After the CEL light turns itself off, I get this:
Trouble codes
KOEO Codes: (key on Engine off)
111System Pass
Memory Codes
214 Cylinder Identification Circuit Failure
KOER Codes (Key On Engine Running)
536 Brake on/off circuit failure. Not actuated during KOER test
632 Trans Control Switch circuit did not change states during KOER
Below is the operation data collected when the CEL was on, maybe someone can recognize something from this.
Operation Data:
1. Engine Speed 788 RPM (idle speed)
2. Spark Advance 22 degrees
3. Intake Air Temp 2.00 volts
4. Engine Coolant Temp 195.40 F
5. EGR feedback .40 volts
6. Throttle Position 1.00 volts
7. Vehicle Power 14.30 Volts
8. Injector PW 4.00 ms
9. EGR Vacuum Regl 0.00
10. Idle Air Control 33%
11. Vehicle speed sensor 0 mph
12. Oxygen Sensor .8 Volts
13. Brake (BOO) Off
14. Park Neutral Yes
15. Low Speed Fan Off
16. High speed Fan Off
17. WOT A/C Cut-off Yes
18. Loop Status Open
19. Power Steering PSI Yes
Any help would be appreciated. I’m totally clueless on what to do next. The Chilton manual doesn’t even list Code 214. I know if I take it in, the shop will just replace something that has already been replaced, reset the codes, and charge me for stuff I’ve already done myself. If you guys have any ideas, I’ll try anything. The explorer has been great until this last half a year.
