Error code 214 on 94 explorer

B

blufrog

I have a error code problem of this nature:
214 Error in Cylinder ID (CID) Circuit or Signal - Ignition Systems.
Can anyone tell me where to search from here. I have no clue as to what to go after, one suggestion was the crank position sensor. I have a new one and for the life of me can not find where the thing mounts at. I tried best I could to search around the bellhousing but do not see it there. Any help would be awesom, I have a 3 week driving trip coming up and want to fix this.

Thanks

The crank position is on the front of the engine, just behind the main engine pully.

What was wrong

FYI it turns out it is the Cam sensor, it is located in the rear of the engine where the distributor hole is and if you remove it then you need to make sure the new one is installed the same as the old one just like a distributor would be and then the vehicle will need to be re-timed. Basically the part cost about $275

Hope this can help someone in the future.

Error Code 214 on Explorer 4.0L

Did replacing the cam shaft position sensor fix your problem? Did you notice any difference in performance before and after the fix? Did you do the work yourself?

I got the same code this week. I found the part at http://www.kmford.com for $200. They have discount prices on all Ford parts.

Please get back to me soon. You can email me at home at parker.devon@worldnet.att.net.

Thanks

I had the same problem and instead of buying a whole new unit, I checked around and bought one from a junk yard and just replaced the top part with the sensor. What had happened was that the magnets had been worn from the metal piece that spins around and breaks the circuit. That kept me from having to mess with the timing, etc. and no more check engine lights. Only models with CA emissions had this sensor as I found out here in WV.

Yea, I called around the junk yards. Unfortunately they are more interested in selling the whole engine. The rednecks here in the Tennessee junk yards don't like to part out engines.

The 94 models with low emission engines had the CID, but all 4.0L that are 95 and later have it, too.

What did you have to remove from the engine to get to it?

I couldn't find one here in WV either so I ended up calling around some junk yards in CA where I was most likely to find one. I think I actually got it for about $80 including shipping. I believe that if you replace the whole unit that you will have to remove the intake which means new gaskets and everything. However, if you have enough patience and are only going to replace the top part, just the sensor, then you can replace it without disturbing anything else. It seems too tight to get it done but it can.

Thanks! I've got big hands, but I'll try to get it in there. On my '95, there is an AC hardline on top of the sensor. I may be able to pull it away. This is going to be a knuckle buster!!!!
