Hey everyone. My CEL comes on pretty frequently now and the only error code that comes up is P0442, something to do with a small leak in the EVAP system. My searching turned up that usually the cause is the PCV plastic tube usually has a crack in it. I've replaced the tube and rubber elbows, along with the pcv valve, but still get the error code. I've also replaced the gas cap and checked there are no holes from corrosion in the filler tube. The fuel tank was replaced by the previous owner and looks to be in good condition. So looking for other suggestions on where to look now.

One interesting thing I've noticed is that it seems to come on more frequently when the weather is warmer. During the winter it may come on once a month but with warmer weather it comes on every other week after I clear it.

I get the same on my 01. I use Torgue for andriod. My research leads to some sort of Charcoal filter on the evap system. I just erase the code with Torque for the moment until I have more time.

Pcv has nothing to do with EVAP System.
Possible cause
1. After market EVAP hardware that does not conform to the required specifications
2. Small holes(1.016mm or .040in) or cuts in the fuel vapor hoses
3. Canister vent soleniod stays partially open on closed command
4. Damage, loose fuel cap or after market fuel cap
5. Loose fuel vapor hose/tube connection to the EVAP system components.
6. EVAP system component seals leaking at or near the EVAP canister purge valve, fuel tank pressure sensor, canister vent solenoid, fuel vapor control valve tube assembly or fuel vapor vent valve assembly.

Thanks! I will take a look at these suggestions. As for the fuel cap, is there a specific brand or place I should get it from? When I first started getting the CEL, I replaced the OEM one with one bought from Advance Auto.

I had that code on my 02 Ranger with similar frustration. Replaced the evap canister vent solenoid and that fixed it. they're available on ebay for cheap.

Another possibility

I know this thread is almost a year old.

Last year I was getting a PO442 CEL. After reading various posts on this fine Forum I was getting myself ready to find a needle in a haystack with the seemingly miles of vacuum lines.

One day I went to pour some Fuel Injector cleaner into the gas tank and I found the end of the fuel filler tube was cracked. I live in Oregon where the drivers aren't smart enough to know how to pump our own gas so I don't see this part as often as most people would! I put some super glue on it, clamped it for a while and had no problems for about eight months. Recently I started getting the error again and sure enough the crack has reopened. I guess one of the professionally trained gas pumpers had to crank real hard on the fuel cap to make sure it was on.

I still think I'll try super glue again before I spend $$$ for a new filler tube.

After dropping my 04 Sport Trac off at the local dealer I was informed that a valve on the canister that sits above the spare tire between the frame rails needed to be replaced. Here is the kicker. Service Advisor says he contacted every dealer between Vegas and Oxnard and no one has the valve... Ford tells him the part is no longer available and aftermarket is the only option. $600 later I have not seen the P0442 code for 500+ miles. It used to pop up every 75 miles after a reset with a programmer.
