Error code P1309.

Hi everybody,

I googled '98 ford Explorer error code P1309 and this site came up. It looks like a great source of info, so I joined.

Bought a 98 Explorer (106K mi) 11 months ago(119K now); no real problems until now. I'm not much of a mechanic, but I follow instructions pretty well.

Waiting at a light, felt a jolt followed by a "clunk"; vehicle wouldn't move, I put it in rev, backed up a few feet, and then back to drive, all seemed OK. About 20 min later, Eng light came on. Scanner reads: P1309, ECM disabled the misfire monitor.

Anybody have any ideas? Drove 35 miles to work like this without any issues.

Thanks very much. It looks like I'm in for an expensive headache.

In the interim, I've spoken with a seasoned gearhead who's pretty sure that the link in one of my gearboxes broke. According to him, I'm probably running with 2WD right now. I don't want to push it, so I'll probably drop it off at the shop on my way home from work in the morning.
