1.5 - 2 full days if you have not done it before.

With help, air tools, all required tools, and no stuck bolts it can easily be done in one day...

get a new pan gasket and filter as well as 12 quarts of Mercon before you start.
remove the exhaust y pipe, its faster

After looking at the pic it looks like its the tail peice. Is it possible to just change this?

yes looks like just the tailhousing, can you access all the bolts?

if so then:

remove driveshafts /skidplate
drain/remove t case, shift motor, vent tube, speedo cable, etc
then remove tailhousing (might have to remove trans x member too)
Install new tailhousing with new gaskets

re-install t case, fill, and be on your way

Hard to tell in the pics what broke (orientation) but I can tell you the underside of your truck is nasty :)

I have installed/removed 3 t cases in the last week and dropped the tranny in my V8 BII, so this is all fresh in my head. If the underside of my truck was like that I would wear a face shield and full overalls when working under there, stuff in your eyes SUCKS

Holy Crap

Good luck man

edit: Better there than on the trail I guess

The main housing on the other side exploded to. Im not gonna even mess with it, ill just park it till i can do the 700r4

IZ always says when you lock the rear the tranny is the next weak link.

Okay so what do you think caused this? Did the axle roll when i slammed the brakes and bind the tranny? Or was it because the output shaft spun with the small side of the drive shaft still on it? My shaft was short def not to long. Just lost as to how all this happened.

Thats what i'm guessing dude. Honestly i don't even know. It straight up broke the tail housing in two. Im gonna replace it with a 700r4 eventually, but for now im gonna throw another a4ld in it. Did you need an adapter for the c5? How do you like it? Maybe i'll look into that tranny

Well, my C5 was built with about a 5" spacer between the trans and t-case to keep the front drive shaft from being too short, I have a spare c5 and manual t-case that I pulled from a BII in a junk yard, from what I hear it's a bolt in application. I honestly don't know crap about trannys, I just know that mine never gets over 200 degrees, I beat on it hard and haven't been let down. Ideally a C5 and a doubler would probably be perfect for drive shaft length and selection of gears. C5 can be built with C4 internals as well. Don't know who else is running one, I know BKennedy, Jefe, Diff Wack Daddy and a few others have gone into the Chevy trans, not sure of their results, a few issues but a better trans for sure. I have nothing bad to say about mine and I pretty much do it all.
