Just as the title says. Not sure how else to put it. On cold mornings I start it up and rpms are at just above 1k and it sounds like a treadmill going full speed. Like a buzzing, whine, noise. Hopefully someone understands. Or like you have your fingernail on the treadmill as it's going full speed. Anyway. It gets louder with acceleration. Usually just for like 30 seconds of driving then it goes away. Like it warms up. Is this a sign that something is failing?

I have a video of the sounds but not sure how to post it

prob the same noise i have now. for me its the power steering pump.
just waiting for my first few paychecks at new job then doing to pay the $100 deductible and get it fix under warranty.

It doesn't seem like a power steering issue as it does it at idle. Plus a power steering pump is cheap and you can do that yourself. They are like 50 dollar aren't they.

marbles rattling?

If it sounds like marbles rattling around in the engine then you may have timing chain issues. One way to determine if it is engine internals or accessories is to remove the serpentine belt and run the engine for 30 seconds to a minute. If the rattle is still there then you know its not the alternator, water pump, power steering pump, A/C compressor, belt idler or tensioner. Don't run the engine for more than a minute since the water pump isn't pumping.

The Explorers from 2006+ have all done this with both the 2006 Limited V6 and both 10' STA's that I have owned. I have been told that an Electric fan conversion eliminates this, but have also been told that it's the A/C Fan. There are several posts on this subject none with a 100% diffinitive answer. When it first happend in the 2006' the dealer had it for 2 days and could not duplicate the issue and then 1-month later the cheap Chinese radiator they came with back then failed, could never prove the two were related. Check your coolant levels just in case, and try cold starting it with the A/C off for a week and see it it goes away. My current 2010 STA still does it sometimes on a cold start but it no longer bothers me.

Wish I could have been more help.

I appreciate your information. I will keep an eye on it!

I also noticed that when i start the truck up in the morning to warm up it sounds like a jet engine. I drop it in reverse and back to park and the rpms drop to normal and it isnt so loud. Opinions?

Bump. When I start it of a morning it is very loud. If I put it in drive it gets quoted and I put it back in park and it stays pretty quiet. Any tips

Mine was the guts in the cat. When it warmed up it got better until they went completely loose. I used the drywall screw trick and its been quiet for a month or so now. I have a new pair sitting in the basement to put on in the spring. Warner has a deal right now if yours is shot. 50 dollar rebate until the end of the month. Cost me under 250 Canadian for 2 cats and a y pipe with the rebate.

To confirm it, I jammed a curling broom between the seat and the gas pedal to hold the rpm's between 900 and 1000. I climbed underneath and grabbed the cat when it was cool with a set of gloves. First I though it was the heat shield, but it wasn't, If I held it tight so it wouldn't vibrate it would quit. Makes sense because last spring when I would hit puddles and they would cool, it would rattle like a son of a ***** until it warmed up again.

Ok thanks. I was thinking power steering pump but you may be right. I'll check into it.

Took the belt off this evening and started it to see if it was an accessory making the noise like a power steering pump or fan etc. the whine was still there. Unfortunately.

thought i would bump this up. Does anybody have a clue on what this "roar" could be.

Short re-description. On cold mornings (below 40 F) the explorer roars until it warms up to normal operating temp. If i drop it into drive and back to park, the noise gets quieter. If i begin to drive before warmed up, the noise increases with rpms.Def coming from front of veh. (firewall up)

Thanks!

also i will add that gas cap light stays on- i changed the gas cap. but if this is indicating a large leak in the evap system somewhere-where should i be checking?

cooling fan?

I'm not familiar with the 4th generation but could the roar be the cooling fan? If you have a viscous clutch on the cooling fan it may be locking causing the fan to rotate at engine speed. If you have an electric cooling fan it may be running at full speed because the A/C is on for the defroster.

It does it even if the blower in veh is off.

And i had accessory belt off but it still made noise

Its your cooling fan running at full speed. Its not supposed to do that. Mine did it until I found bare wires in the fan wiring harness. Mine is also a 2006, so I suspect we have the same type of insulation on the wires. Check this post for what I found.

I just wrapped each wire with electrical tape. Since I did that, I have not had the roar one single time, and the engine performance improvement was startling.

I will certainly check it out when i get home. Thanks!

can some ID this line? Looks like it has power steering fluid coming out of it. Could this be the source of the whine? It doesnt really leak much on the ground or anything. Not sure

I want to say that those are the lines that come off of the integrated tranny cooler on the radiator. Could just be ATF. Picture was taken of the front lower left hand (passenger side) area of the engine right?
