I am pretty much set on the superchips chip and now Im trying to find an exhaust to go with it. Borla and flowmaster dont list an exhaust for 99s. Has anyone with a 99 added a chip and/or an exhaust (cat-back)? Which did you go with and how do you like it?

I already have the KKM air intake. Thanks

Bryan, I've added the chip. It made a noticable difference, but I don't think I've added 10-12% more power as they claim it will. It's more like 5%. My test was somewhat subjective, but it does climb hills in OD better than it did. Also, forced downshifts (mashing the throttle) can now be done, whereas before, I couldn't get the gear I needed.

If you can get the "internet coupon" from smartyparts.com, you should be able to get the SuperChips chip for $170.

I haven't done anything with the exhaust yet, but I do intend to change that after I tackle the rear springs. Let me know if you find a flowmaster or gibson cat-back.

Just curious, did the intake do anything for you?

Tom,
I see you put 265/75 BFGs on your explorer. Would you say it was a big enough improvement to throw away the originals or wait for them to wear out 1st?
Thanks for the info thus far.

Smartypants needs my code off of my computer.
I am in Bosnia right now and I cant get the computer number off of the box myself. Can anyone tell me exactly where and how to locate this number so I can tell my wife exactly how to find the number for me?

I've been looking to get a chip for my 2000 Explorer also (4.0 SOHC), is it pretty easy to install? I'm still working on my mechanics prowess so unless it's got an "Installation for Dummies" included I'd probably have to take it to my local offroad store.
As for the exhaust, Pro-Max (www.pro-max.com) is just down in Tacoma and they don't have any kits listed from Flowmaster, but they did a custom install with the dual in, single out system which looks and performs great. If you don't want to wait for a complete kit to come out, I'd suggest going and getting a custom job done. I'dve spent the same amount on a kit and installing it myself as I did buying the parts and getting them to custom fit and bend everything to my truck.

Why do I always think of "Top gun" when I see your name? Dead Link Removed

Anyway, the computer is located on the firewall on the 99's, towards the passinger side. There's a large connector plugged into it, and the computer itself slides in to the firewall. It's face is about 5" wide by 1.5" tall. There's a sticker on the computer itself that has several numbers on it. The large 4 or 5 digit code is what you want. I think mine was "CDE3", though I could be wrong (and I'm too lazy to go out and look). You can read the sticker without pulling the computer out or removing the sticker.

As far as the tires, I sold the originals. No sense having two sets of tires hanging around, especially with a 1 car garage.

Sean, the chip isn't hard to install. It comes with decent instructions. The thing to watch out for is cleaning off the contacts on the computer's circuit board. They are coated with some type of lacquer to protect them, but the lacquer must be completely removed.

As far as the exhaust, I'm not going to mess with it right now, but I do know that the factory exhaust on the SOHC engine has two 2 1/4" pipes going into the muffler and one 2" pipe coming out. It seems to me that this setup is a bit restrictive, though it may be tuned that way on purpose.

The Borla cat back system from a '97 sport with the SOHC 4.0L can be fitted on a '99. Borla confirmed this...I bought the system last May. LOVE IT!

Jack had a Borla on his Exploder. The only problem he had was crushing when four wheeling because it stuck out the back too far. He kept hitting it when he would come down ledges. Just a thought. I think I heard of somebody having come out the side for that reason, but I can't remember.

Thats true! The Trailmaster Explorer had the same thing happen down in Truckhaven. The first ledge it slid down crushed the tip of the exhaust. I cant remember what aftermarket system they had.
Thanks for the reminder.

I had a Dynomax Turbo Cat-Back on my 94 Eddie and really liked it but I didn't realize the sound quality potential until another Explorer with a Flowmaster pulled up next to me. All I thought was "Whoa." So I keep the 2.25 piping that I got from my Dynomax and replaced the muffler with a Flowmaster 40 series and Ba Boom. Awsome sound, and actually a little better pick up. I dunno, just something to think about Dead Link Removed.

Greengoose: The chip was fairly easy the first time to install, now I can take it out and back in a few minutes. The instructions are good, but fail to mention that it's easier to just take the plastic CDE frame with it when you remove it.
Exhaust: Sound vs. acceleration....the bigger the exit pipe the louder, but for me low end torque and acceleration were best with a 2.25 exit pipe. ( called back presssure).
