Hi everyone, I have an 03 4.6 explorer and i get a rotten egg smell when Im accelerating hard. Rarly but more so in the summer months. Why is this? I have been told that it is from a lazy o2 sensor and I have been told that it is a clogged Catalytic converter?Which or both? I priced all the parts and labor for getting a new exhaust system. Basically xxxxxxxx and adding a 50 series flowmaster, the job costs around 250 total. I dont have to do nothing. What would you do, or any advice. Having a nice exhaust would be nice! Thanks for the help.

Normal characteristic of cat converter operation, just let it go.

It's also a taboo subject here to discuss removing any emission equipment.

Verboten!

when did this start??

jchiodo - new cats tend to smell like this for so many thousand miles till they settle in. the reason only does it when u gas it hard is because of the extra heat generated burnig the ceramic. The extra heat also accounts for why it does it more so in the summer months

if u want to do the exhaust though, go for it, it'l flow better, go better and give ya better economy too. if im allowed to say, the V8's sound awesome without the cats in the system

your post pretty much sums up what you WANT to do... you WANT to explain to Wifey why you NEED a performance exhaust... Right there with you my friend!... lol

Facts:

* cats smell. no way around it. Winter blend gas in most areas cause more stuff for the Cat to deal with. Summer blends, especially in high-ozone areas are HORRIBLE with egg smell. Doesn't mean the exhaust or 02's are bad... just don't tell Wifey that...

* A free flowing exhaust will get more of the smell away faster, at the expense of noise. Louder exhaust, ESPECIALLY Flowmater <crap my opinion> will create a volume level most wives won't tolerate. Unless you go 40-series or 50-series Flowmaster mufflers, the noise will be significant.

* go to youtube, search Explorer Exhaust... listen to what is posted....

My wife HATED my MAC cat back on my '01 5.0L V8, which to me was almost too mellow.

Cat is NOT the issue, its the Winter Blend of the gas you are burning.

Thanks all. after final deleberations I think I will just leave it on there for now and put a 50 series flowmaster. If I like it then ill just leave it alone. Maybe in the future a High flow cat could go it its place?? 2002 GreyHD150 Your right on the money with my wifey she didnt like the egg smell so I told her a new exhaust might fix it Yady Yady lol. Well thanks again everyone.
