When I first start up, I have what sounds like an exhaust leak. After the car runs for less then 5 minutes it slowly goes away. It almost sounds like a valve is shutting. I have crawled under the car and felt around and don't feel anything. Any ideas?

It's most likely related to the timing chains, could be a tensioner.

Not with a 5.0

I guarantee you have a crack passenger side exhaust manifold. Most likely it's cracked under the heat shield so you can't see it.

THanks, I will look at that. I do not think it is a tensioner as it is not a ticking but an increase in noise. Sounds like I have glasspacks on it. Yes, I'm showing my age.

I can almost guarantee , when you tear into it your passenger side manifold will be a 2 piece design. Problem is, they are built in one piece-

If you search ebay for explorer v8 exhaust manifold you may find some good cast replacements. I do not recommend replacing them with the same tubular design though. The later cast models have a egr bung on them which will need to be capped off for your internal egr system.

Or, use your member discount and get torque monster headers. You are a member here so the discount is there to be taken.

The headers are the best option by far.

Doh' I didn't even catch the 5.0 part.
